For those not familiar: “Since 1998, Sankofa has been a cultural center, bookstore and cafe devoted to people of African descent”
Ed. Note: Sankofa also applied for a liquor license back in 2011. Not sure if that went ever went through or not.

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Third District seek the public’s assistance in identifying and locating suspects and a vehicle in reference to an Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (Gun) offense that occurred on Thursday, May 27, 2021, in the 400 block of W Street, Northwest.
At approximately 7:39 pm, members of the Third District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. While responding, members were informed that a shooting victim had arrived at a local hospital. Officers responded to the hospital and located an adult male receiving treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

Looks like they still have a Gaithersburg, MD location.
Dulcinea opened here in February 2012. Not sure exactly when they closed but there used to be a nice one/two with them and Mama Chuy next door. And so it goes. Stay tuned to see what becomes of the space.

Owner Kent “Kenny” Gilmore has suffered several strokes and can no longer continue maintaining the deli. Additionally, COVID significantly impacted sales at the deli since his beloved Howard University and Benjamin Banneker High School Faculty and Students were not physically present to create foot traffic into the deli. There is a movement going on there right now to address some long-standing labor issues, most significantly, that Howard Lecturers are paid less than any DC area university, and that administrators impose a bizarre 7 year cap on employment, so Lecturers are automatically fired after 7 years. “Dear Howard University Community,
I am writing to inform you of a need to escalate the university’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic. A guest who attended the Howard University Charter Day Dinner has tested positive for COVID-19 (coronavirus). Out of an abundance of caution, we are asking all March 7 dinner participants to monitor and report to your doctor if you begin exhibiting flu-like symptoms. The DC Department of Health is investigating the case, locating and counseling relevant contacts in accordance with the latest national guidance and protocols. We are working closely with the department and have been advised that the chances of contracting the virus are low.
The individual has complied with DC Department of Health’s guidance to remain self-isolated. Our direct concern is the recovery and well-being of the affected individual and their loved ones. We will continue to prioritize the most vulnerable among us and do everything we can to safeguard the health and wellness of our university staff, students and surrounding communities.
We have consulted with medical and public-health experts and regrettably, our University leadership has arrived at the conclusion that a return to campus for face-to face instruction will not be possible for the Spring, 2020 semester. To be clear, we are taking the following steps: (more…)
