A very interesting and sad story from the City Paper:

“Legendary U Street jazz club Bohemian Caverns will close at the end of March.”

You can see the calendar of their last scheduled events here. And you can read some more of their history here.

So where will you listen to Jazz now? Sad to see how many spots we briefly discussed in 2008 are no longer around.

From WMATA:

“Starting Sunday, March 6, Metrorail faregates accept SmarTrip only and will no longer accept paper farecards, a key milestone on Metro’s yearlong phase-out of the outdated fare media. Customers with paper farecards may transfer the value to a SmarTrip card by using the brown vending machines at Metrorail stations or at any Metro sales office through June 30, 2016.”

and

“Georgia Ave-Petworth east side entrance (closest to northbound lanes of Georgia Ave NW)
Temporary closure begins Monday, March 21, 2016

Two escalators will be replaced at the station entrance located on the east side of Georgia Ave NW. The entrance will be temporarily closed for approximately 45 weeks to accommodate construction.
Customers may access the station via the west side entrance, located directly across Georgia Ave NW.
The current escalators were installed when the station opened in 1999.
Metro has already installed five new escalators at Georgia Ave-Petworth Station.”

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know if Posto has shut its doors? It was closed tonight [Sunday] and there was what seemed to be a small makeshift memorial (votive candles, etc.) in front of it. There’s no info on any closing on the website or their voice mail, but according to Open Table, there are no reservations available through March. Any info?”

On Saturday a tipster also emailed:

“Apparently Posto on 14th is closing for good this weekend. Any news?!”

and

“the building had been sold and the restaurant was closing”

Sadly the owner confirmed in an email to me on Saturday:

“Yes today it’s our last shift.”

A bit overshadowed by the new guys – Posto opened in the former Viridian space (which was also an awesome spot) back in January 2009. Posto survived the months (years?) long construction where the sidewalk in front of their restaurant was covered by plywood. The food was great too. RIP. Hope someone keeps the tradition of great restaurants in this spot alive.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the Washington Business Journal report yesterday:

“The home of Millie & Al’s, 2440 18th St. NW, is for sale, according to a postcard we received Tuesday from Josh Feldman of Marcus & Millichap. The list price is $1.8 million for the 2,562-square-foot building on a 2,719-square-foot lot.

Most importantly, from the broker: The building will be “delivered vacant.”

I’ve emailed the owner for official word and am still waiting to hear back from her. In April 2013 to celebrate their 50th Anniversary the owner wrote A Brief History about Original Owner Al Shapiro – definitely worth a read if you missed it. Updates as soon as more info is known.

A reader reports:

“Just wanted to let you know that Field to City, a small corner grocery store on 2nd and Rhode Island NW has closed. My GF and I have been going there for a few years to pick up high quality locally grown produce, dairy, and eggs (not to mention a huge beer selection). Talked to the owner briefly and he said it had been heading this way for a while. Sad to see the only real grocery option in Bloomingdale close.”

Field to City emails:

“I am actually taking orders by text and email, and maintain a short list of popular items that can be viewed via autoreply on my [email protected] account.”

My favorite comment from IntangibleArts when we judged Mehak back in 2010:

“I call this one decent “utility-grade” curry. That is, when you wake up & your first thought is I MUST HAVE A CURRY FIX TODAY, like a classic addict (guilty!), it’s a suitable methodone. Not the best but far from wretched. But then, I’d rather have a bad curry than a GOOD anything else.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with “middle of the road”… ask any possum on the B/W parkway.

what?”
