In late December Barredindc reported that “The Big Hunt Has Terminated Its Lease. Building for Sale/Rent”. I’ve been waiting for official word to come out but after spotting this dreaded sticker, I can be in denial no more:

For those not familiar:
“The Big Hunt is a one-of-a-kind dive bar and comedy venue in a sea of trendy clubs in the Dupont Circle area of Washington DC.
Open since 1992, The Big Hunt is one of DC’s oldest beer bars and has been serving quality craft beers on draft since long before the craft movement became mainstream”
The Big Hunt’s website is no longer live, their phone number has been disconnected and their last Facebook post is a tribute to their founder Joe Englert (RIP) and the page lists that they have “Permanently Closed”.

There’s much that can be said about The Big Hunt. It had it’s ups and downs like all spots do that have been open for so many years. At the end of the day all I can say is that I spent many many hours here, had many many good times here and met many many great people here. This Big Hunt was a great bar. (more…)

“The AMC Theaters website now says “AMC Mazza Gallerie 7 Has Permanently Closed. We hope to see you at our next nearest location: AMC Courthouse Plaza 8.” I went to Mazza Gallerie just before 6 PM yesterday, and I noted that the three remaining shops in the interior (more…)

WUSA9 reported:
“An iconic D.C. business was forced to close because of the coronavirus pandemic and the owner’s medical issues.”
From GoFundMe:
“The iconic Howard Deli, located on Georgia Avenue NW, sadly had to close its doors after 40 years of serving the community. Owner Kent “Kenny” Gilmore has suffered several strokes and can no longer continue maintaining the deli. Additionally, COVID significantly impacted sales at the deli since his beloved Howard University and Benjamin Banneker High School Faculty and Students were not physically present to create foot traffic into the deli. From WAMU:
“After 23 years delivering vital, regional news programming to the D.C. region, The Kojo Nnamdi Show will end production this spring. WAMU announced today that the final live show will air on Thursday, April 1, 2021. While host Kojo Nnamdi will be stepping back from his daily duties on the mic, he will stay engaged with his four-decades-long commitment to journalism by continuing to host the popular The Politics Hour on Fridays. “The voicemail greeting was a long and somewhat emotional one — worth calling and giving it a listen. (202) 723-7142
It didn’t specifically say why Dr. Thornburgh was retiring, but he was getting up in years and I think had been planning to retire at some point anyway. My guess is that the pandemic probably accelerated that decision.
A veterinarian friend of mine from high school caught COVID-19 at work — fortunately, he recovered fully. I suppose that’s a good reminder that it’s a frontline occupation. (more…)

Thanks to ‘things’ for the heads up: “wtfff why is everything in Chinatown closing?”
A call to Urban Outfitters confirms that the Chinatown closing is indeed permanent. They do note that the one in Georgetown (3111 M Street, NW) remains open.

First the World Market closed inside the Bed Bath and Beyond in Chinatown and soon it’ll be farewell in Friendship Heights.
Did I need box of herring fillets, a 6 pack of Tsingtao beer, a king tut mini snow globe and zebra travel umbrella? No, no I did not*. Did I buy them because they were on sale? Yes. Yes I did. [*my children would disagree. On the snow globe and zebra umbrella anyway.] Get yours by the end of the month. (more…)
