“Dear PoPville,

I’m planning to get a Covid test this week before traveling for Thanksgiving, and I was wondering if the city’s response time has gotten slower now that cases are on the rise and more people are probably getting tested. I’m planning to get a test Thursday or Friday ahead of a Monday flight and want to be sure I’ll have the results in time. I think that would be okay, but what have people’s experiences been lately?”

“Dear PoPville,

We just received a letter that our elementary school is eliminating playground access for its students during the school day because of the CARE program. Is this happening at other schools? Basically, about 10 percent of the students will be in the school building taking online classes, and they will use the playground during recess, and so the playground isn’t available to the 90 percent of kids who will continue remote learning at home.

In the remote learning environment the playground is essential for elementary students. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My wife has been working ridiculous hours lately, and probably will be doing so until mid-December. Normally, we would reward ourselves with a vacation somewhere warm, but we’re not comfortable flying in the pandemic. Where is a good place to go for a long weekend, within driving distance (maybe 8 hours max), that has COVID-safe winter activities besides being cold (my wife doesn’t ski) and sitting in a hotel room? I had been thinking about the Homestead Resort in Virginia for the outdoor hot springs, but I’ve heard it’s kind of run down for the price, so not sure about that one. Any other ideas for a relaxing and safe weekend trip?”

From Jack Rose (2007 18th Street, NW):

And now, Jack Rose is expanding on the popularity of its sweet-meets-spicy drumettes, by launching the “Jack Rose Wing Club” – a ghost kitchen pop-up featuring take-out and delivery-only wing feasts – starting November 11. “Dear PoPville,

A weird “best of” topic, but I may be required to start traveling for work again soon, not excited about it. We have good cloth masks for everyday use, from Everlane, but they do get a bit smothering. A colleague recommended Athleta for better breathability.

What have you all been purchasing for washable non-surgical masks that make you feel safe(ish) and that are breathable/can be worn comfortably for long periods of time?”

“Private chalets at Stable // Photo Credit- Amanda Hoey”

From Stable (1324 H Street, NE):

“DC’s only authentic Swiss restaurant, Stable, will welcome guests back to their H Street home on November 12 for the first time since mid-March with a transformed dining room that will transport guests to wintertime in Switzerland. In lieu of traditional tables, five individual ski chalets – each with their own walls and vented roof overhangs- will create separation and privacy between individual parties. Guests opting to dine in chalets will be seated in the back room of the restaurant. The front will remain the base of Stable’s carry out operation and to-go market featuring bread and pastries baked fresh daily as well as Swiss wine, beer and specialty cocktails. A window perch opening on to H Street will also accommodate one party and, for the first time, Stable will add outdoor dining on the sidewalk in front of the restaurant as well as that of their neighbor, Atlas Vet.
