Maman’s about section from New York says:

“on any given day of the week, maman welcomes sleepy new yorkers, local celebrities, moms-on-the-go, business partners, and friends into one of our many locations. greeted by the scent of culinary splendor that wafts through the space, our guests step into an experience that engages all of the senses: rustic décor at every turn, the aroma and comfort of cuisines inspired by family traditions, and the highest quality, locally sourced ingredients. maman founders benjamin sormonte and elisa marshall have brought to life a melding of our earliest childhood experiences in the kitchen and a nod to their mothers from the south of france and north america. maman, after all, means “mother” in french. what started as an independent soho café and bakery in october 2014 is now a leading lifestyle brand that boasts cafés across north america, plus retail items so you can ‘take maman home’ with you. “Dear PoPville,

I’m a professional baker and I recently started a small neighborhood bakery in Petworth specializing in breads and Ashkenazi Jewish treats. Since we’re heading into the cold winter months, I thought your readers might be interested in stocking up some carbs. Plus, it’s an unconventional business model.

The business is called Velvel Breads and it functions like a CSA — customers buy a month of bread upfront, then get to pick up a loaf each week. Currently, I offer sourdough loaves on Wednesdays and challah loaves on Fridays, with the option for customers to add on different treats each week (more…)

Back in Nov. ’09, Danny Harris wrote a People’s District post titled Nicole on the Last Remnants of Italian Life on North Capitol Street. It was fascinating. I finally went for a visit myself last weekend and I was absolutely blown away (as I should’ve known.) The place is a true time warp for many reasons but for all those who’ve been pining for a proper bakery – I don’t care if you live nowhere near here – it is worth the travel! I would go just to talk with the former owner, Mr. Caruso (now retired), who will tell you all about the history of the bakery and the neighborhood. They are only open for retail Sat. morning around 7:30am until around 1pm.

I bought a chocolate bread that was ridiculously good – seriously no other way to describe it. Plus they have proper Italian bread and rolls, other pastries and their famous biscotti. For those who know good Italian subs in DC – these folks are the suppliers for Mangialardo’s and A. Litteri among many others. Enough said, right? So next Sat. go visit! They are located at 1404 N. Capitol St, NW (just south of P).

As I said – this post will give you a taste of how old school and awesome this place is in photos:

“Dear PoP,

Do you know what’s going on with Chatman’s D’Vine Bakery on 9th street by the Convention Center? It seems to be pretty much always closed recently, except for a few rare and random times when I’ve seen someone in there behind the counter. Are they going out of business?”

I’m happy to report that I had a delicious grilled cheese sandwich on Saturday afternoon. Though in hindsight I probably should have taken advantage of the breakfast all day on Saturday:

I asked the guy working the counter if they were reducing hours at all and he looked at me like I was crazy. According to him they are business as usual with regular hours. Has anyone else noticed if their hours have been irregular?

And perhaps more importantly, do they have the best sweet potato pie?

If anyone checks them out be sure to let us know how their cupcakes rank.

From a reader:

“I stopped by an open doorway yesterday of an upcoming hispanic bakery on 14th between perry and parkwood, called Sweet Treats. 6 owners or so were there, planning things and testing some bread, and they gave me a warm loaf for free. they said they expect to open in two or three weeks, and will open outdoor seating next spring/summer.”

I also walked by and they were giving away free pieces of cake.

Located at 4532 Georgia Ave NW Flip It Bakery is a great place to go to eat dessert after you have lunch at Moroni and Brothers Pizza (see above).
