From an email:

“With Star Wars mania poised to sweep D.C. with the opening of The Force Awakens next Friday, a member of Washington National Cathedral’s staff will be visiting D.C. theatres, dressed as Darth Vader. Intimidating as this Lord Vader may be though, moviegoers may want to go over and meet him – this Vader will be passing out cards with a chance to win a private gargoyle tower climb at the Cathedral, featuring the building’s own stone carving of Darth Vader. This special promotion highlights the unique role Star Wars plays in the history of the National Cathedral. (more…)

Happy Anniversary Upshur Street Books – Party Sunday:

“I hope you might join us for our First Anniversary Open House on Sunday night from 6-8pm in the new Third Floor space above Slim’s [4201 Georgia Ave, NW].

One year ago on November 1st, Upshur Street Books became a part of the DC literary community. Since then many people have contributed to help make the bookstore a success: owner Paul Ruppert; manager Anna Thorn; our booksellers Karin, Lily, Peter, and Sara; our customers; and lots and lots of amazing authors. We did it!

A new independent, community bookstore is an achievement to be proud of. Thanks for being a part of it – now come help us celebrate!

The party will take place at our newest event space on the third floor of the forthcoming Slim’s Diner. There will be music by Paperhaus and Sean Barna, food, drinks, special discounts, and delightful bookish conversation. The bookstore will be open from 10am to 9pm.”
