Thanks to Terry for always passing on the latest from the National Park Service:

“…it does not look like the funding for this project will be available until at least the 2027 Fiscal Year. We are anxious to get the fountain repaired as well, but unfortunately we do not have the funding for it at this time.” (more…)

What the Helen of Troy is This

Readers messaged just before 9pm Sunday night:

“My lights just flickered and something very loud (transformer?) sounded like it just exploded in Columbia Heights”

“What on earth was that explosion just now in Petworth?”

Thanks to J. for sending the explanation (and photo above) last night:

“An oil switch and a transformer blew on Newton and 16th. The Pepco team was here doing work on the transformer and clearly something went wrong.”

Looks like power has been restored.

schools

“Dear PoPville,

Ms. Haynes teaches at John Lewis Elementary School, a dcps school located in NW DC. Ms. Haynes is the most dedicated, fun loving and caring teacher you could ever wish for. She goes above and beyond to support her students, including spending weekends at their various events to cheer them on. Her love for teaching is infectious and she takes time to make each and every child feel special. She is well deserving of this prize after spending her own money on classroom rewards and supplies for kids in need.

Here are the details from the contest.

Tell us why you became a teacher

I knew I wanted to become a teacher when I was in the 4th grade. Inspired by my 4th grade teacher, Tracey Webb, I decided while I was in her class that I would become a 4th grade teacher to make sure everyone had the most amazing 4th grade, just like I did. I’ve had a one track mind since I was in the 4th grade and I am currently in the middle of my 13th year in the classroom.
Tell us about your most memorable teaching experience

I’ve had countless memorable moments in my career but what has been the most memorable, what will stick with me past forever are the deaths of 5 of my students. Rest in peace Stormiyah. Rest in peace Karon. Rest in peace Jakhi. Rest in peace Kevin. Rest in peace Demarcos.
What would you do with the $25,000?

I would tithe ten percent, save ten percent, have a party with my classes to celebrate the win and put the rest towards debt so that I can begin to save for a home.”

Much like her Bob’s Burgers namesake, Gayle is equal parts quirky, cuddly, and just one interpretive dance away from writing a song about your soul.

Gayle is a certified purr monster and living, breathing art. Her whisker smudges? Avant-garde. Her big, soulful eyes? Windows to a heart that just knows you’re her muse (and also the person who controls the food).

Sure, she might play coy at first — an artist must protect her process — but offer up a belly rub or two, and she’ll be in your lap faster than you can say “can of wet food.” And speaking of cans? Crack one open and prepare to witness Gayle’s signature kitchen gallop, followed by a purring performance piece titled “I Deserve That Entire Plate.”

When she’s not workshopping her next great chase scene with her equally iconic sister Linda (yes, LINDA), Gayle can be found basking dramatically in a sunbeam, likely contemplating her next creative endeavor (or nap). Linda and Gayle are the ultimate duo, a pair of cuddly co-stars, and Gayle would be thrilled to have other feline friends in her entourage.

If your home is lacking a bit of wonderfully chaotic, affectionate, deeply artistic energy, Gayle is ready to fill that void — and then some. Adopt Gayle. Become part of the performance. 🎭🐾
