13 years!!?!! My goodness time seriously does fly. Remember the 3 year anniversary party at Wonderland? That was legendary but this one is fixing to be pretty sweet too. It’s gonna be upstairs at Moreland’s Tavern (14th/Kennedy and Colorado Ave, NW) from 6:30pm-10:30pm and perhaps a bit longer if I’m recovered from World Series watching. We’re even kicking a DJ this year – my man Eric will be spinning a pretty solid rotation of the Beastie Boys and 99 Luftballoons. In other words – it’s gonna be lit.

It’s been a hell of a ride my friends. Lots of ups and downs and highs and lows and fear and fun and love and learning. In other words – life. And I just want to take the opportunity to thank all of you for continuing to make it possible. Whether you are a reader, a commenter, a lurker or just follow us on social media – you are part of the PoPville community – hell – you are PoPville and I couldn’t do this without you.

For those who have been kind enough to support us financially – I can’t tell you how much it means to me. When I struck out on my own over 10 years ago (worked two jobs the first three years) – I had no idea if this was going to be viable. I had no business plan or anything like that – I just had the passion to cover our neighborhoods in a new way. Leaving my full time job I would have no benefits – no sick leave – no vacation – no nothing. Just faith that it would work. And against all odds it has. But it’s not just faith that makes it possible. By becoming a patreon you help ensure that this site will keep going for at least the next 17 years.

We are a huge local community. If a tiny percentage of those who are able can give even just $2 a month – it can make a world of difference. If you enjoy our posts, our rants and raves, our tweets, our takes, our sweet city rides, our scuttlebutt, our hawks and of course Earl the white whale, our advice, our multi modal corgis, our breaking news, our community – please do consider becoming a supporter. Thank you. For those who are not able – I truly understand and it is OK. We will make it work.

Now we celebrate 13 years – let’s get ready to party – Thursday, November 7th – Moreland’s Tavern – it is on!!!

Nationals

Ed. Note: It’s certainly not life or death but I’m also curious where you guys weigh in? I tend to agree with OP that residents should be given dibs for both nights before inviting guests. You guys?

“Dear PoPville,

I am a huge Nats fan, and after their win last night its looking like we could potentially win the World Series on Saturday night. Given how much I love the Nats, I choose to hand over thousands of dollars to live next to the stadium. Usually not worth it, but the chance to watch the World Series from my rooftop is once in a lifetime.

However, 1221 has now decided that residents can only pick ONE night to watch from the roof, we need to RSVP, and oddly enough we can bring two guests. Again, for only ONE game though. If I want to see Friday I can’t go on my own rooftop Saturday. (more…)

Crime

I got a bunch of messages from folks asking why KIPP was on lockdown earlier this week – now we know why and it is awful. From the Washington Post:

“The incident occurred in a middle-school classroom at KIPP DC Key Academy in the 4800 block of Benning Road SE, according to the school and a police report. The report said the boy and girl were arguing “about a pencil” shortly before 12:30 p.m. when the boy brandished a pocket knife and threatened to stab the girl.

He then lifted his shirt, showing the girl a loaded Beretta pistol, police said.”

Event

The DC Chamber Musicians close out the 25-26 season with popular works by Brahms and Dohnanyi, and three selections of newer works that are sure to delight. All set in the lovely St. Thomas’ Parish Episcopal Church in the Dupont Circle neighborhood. Join us afterward for a reception featuring light refreshments (including beer and wine) and an opportunity to chat with the musicians.

On the Program

U Street

Remember that tagged car on U Street? Turns out it was likely stolen/abandoned. Lots of folks wrote to me about that and then Katie writes this morning:

“anyone know the deal with the stolen stripped cars that keep showing up on the 900 blk Ust NW? That DC leaves for WEEKS while they get stripped? Been months now, here’s the current stock. (photo above) (more…)

Dupont Circle

OK my friends – it’s 2019 and shit happens fast around here. It’s just scuttlebutt. But scuttlebutt of this variety must be shared with haste. Updates, as always, when confirmed and/or more is known. So, earlier this morning we posted a sign announcing Rosemarys Thyme Bistro (18th and S Street, NW) closure. It was shocking to me and many others. Well on our Facebook Page the following conversation took place: “PIZZA IS COMING!!!” and “one of the comments said Pupatella!! Please say it’s true!!! That would be a game changer. Best pizza in the DMV and worth the trek to Arlington! (But maybe soon not necessary!)”

STAY TUNED.
