Ed. Note: Yesterday there were 13,469 total positives.

From the Mayor’s Office:

“The District’s reported data for Friday, August 21, 2020 includes 65 new positive coronavirus (COVID-19) cases, bringing the District’s overall positive case total to 13,534.

The District reported two additional COVID-19 related deaths.

· 47-year-old male
· 59-year-old female

Tragically, 604 District residents have lost their lives due to COVID-19.

The community spread chart is subject to fluctuation because the data is based on symptom onset date. As national demand for testing increases and results take longer to come back in DC and across the country, DC Health has identified a need to increase the reporting lag time by four days to reduce volatility in the data. The most recent data reflects an increase in community spread. To ensure this graph accurately reflects the most recent data, the community spread count is being paused as these adjustments are made.” (more…)

Zoo

via Smithsonian’s National Zoo

And there was great joy throughout the land.

From the National Zoo:

“Giant panda Mei Xiang gave birth to a cub at Smithsonian’s National Zoo today, Aug. 21.

Animal care staff witnessed the birth at 6:35 p.m. Mei Xiang picked the cub up immediately and began cradling and caring for it. The panda team heard the cub vocalize and glimpsed the cub for the first time briefly immediately after the birth. (more…)

gardening

Thanks to C.J. for sending: “Post-storm garden haul from a Columbia Heights balcony! We’ve got shallots, cucumbers, sweet and Thai basil, dill, and yellow pear tomatoes…some still on a branch that didn’t survive Tropical Storm Isaias. Not pictured: jalapenos, bell peppers, and rainbow chilis!”

Please send your hauls to [email protected] and let me know what neighborhood it was grown in. Entries will be accepted through Labor Day weekend.

Dear PoPville

“Dear PoPville,

I would like to ask the PoPville community to help get the word out to recruit more DC residents, including young people 16 years and older, to sign up as DC poll workers. It’s a great way to be a part of this historic election and earn about $750 dollars for attending 1 training and 5 short early voting shifts as well as full shift on voting day. Masks, social distancing and other protocols are strictly followed throughout for safety.

In the District, there will be ballot drop boxes around town, but also a full week of early voting with lots of polling places to make sure everyone will be able to vote. Poll workers can request assignment to their most convenient polling places. (more…)

Animal Fix

If you have any animal/pet photos you’d like to share for the regular fix please send an email to princeofpetworth(at)gmail(dot)com with ‘Animal Fix’ in the title and say the name of your pet and your neighborhood. AdoPtville is run by two volunteers who compile these pets weekly from local shelters.

If your castle is in need of a pint-sized princess, look no further than Abbey. Having raised her three rambunctious kittens, Abbey is looking for a quiet place to call her own.

This dainty diva is just beginning to learn “how to cat” and trust humans but she clearly craves attention and will vocalize whenever she thinks she is not getting enough! Abbey happily purrs, runs figure eights through your legs and asks for pets constantly but if you go too far and try to rub her belly, you will be rewarded with a solid whack (no claws) . (I mean…she is a disciplinarian Abbess after all…)

Abbey would do best with an experienced cat owner who can continue to help her grow. If this quirky queen sounds like a good fit for you, please email [email protected]. You can see her background on instagram @pokeypotpie and her current life @bnussb01.

Ariel might be the most special of our special dogs. She has the largest and most dedicated groupies a dog could ever have. When Ariel came to Lost Dog and Cat Rescue Foundation, we noticed right away that she had an issue with her – ahem- back end. X-rays revealed an old traumatic injury, probably from being hit by a car that had left her with a muscle tone deficit. This lack of muscle tone means she doesn’t have full control of her bowels. She has been going to physical therapy to help her build muscles and we are seeing some improvement. In the meantime, when Ariel goes out on Dogventures (and she goes on the regular, thanks to her fan club) she rocks a purple diaper and rocks it with style. Sometimes, she tops the diaper with a NASA t-shirt because we all know astronauts are the coolest and they also wear diapers, so…

Ariel is tolerant, patient, incredibly friendly, and loves to wrestle and play with other dogs. She is good in the car, walks nicely on a leash and is always excited to meet new friends. She is looking for a special someone, maybe with a laundry room where she can sleep at night and the ability to get her outside often during the day.

For more photos, check her out on Instagram. To learn more, email [email protected].
