“Dear PoPville,

I was walking near the Zoo Loop Trail yesterday at 5:45pm, and the gates on both ends were wide open, with the trail getting plenty of use. Were the hours quietly extended” or did they just forget to close it?

Update from a reader:

“The trail is open until 7pm during the zoo’s summer hours. They are able to keep the trail area staffed and open for an hour after they close according to the zoo’s Director.” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m hoping you can help me find a witness. Around 2:45 pm yesterday (Wed.), I was stopped at the light on Park Place and Kenyon Street NW. I was in the left lane, next to the southbound bike lane. Very suddenly, 2-3 cars (maybe Kia Souls? Those boxy kind of cars) sped by going through the red light on my right, and another came up behind me and drove over the flexiposts/concrete through the bike lane to do the same. There were no cyclists or others in the lane, thank goodness.

I heard a scrape, not a crash, and was so stunned I didn’t know what to do. As I got out to look at the car, I noticed scratches and scraping. I then saw a police car drive by, and turn right on Kenyon (not following any of the cars, no lights on, etc). (more…)

“Update large brush fire Rock Creek Park at Beach Drive & Piney Branch Pkwy. NW. working to surround fire. Putting hose lines in place to protect homes on Quincy St NW, where fire is traveling uphill. Hose line used to protect a home on Quincy St NW towards which the brush fire was extending. All homes have been protected.”

From AlertDC: “DC FEMS reports that motorist should avoid the area of Beach Drive and Rock Creek Parkway until further notice due to Fire Department Activity.”
