I will be posting initial entries for 1 more week or so before the semifinal rounds commence. Remember if you have a favorite please let me know. If you emailed a photo of your pet I promise all photos will be posted, patience please, there are tons (literally hundreds) of pets in PoPville!

Please don’t make up names and “vote” for your pet multiple times. If you do so, and I catch you, (which is not hard to catch) your pet will be disqualified.

Squiddy

Rowdy

“rowdy (aka ‘the professor’, left) is the biggest snuggle buddy in the world and loves to hug and spoon while napping. she has won the hearts of even the most avid cat haters. rake mcclane, detective (aka ‘the detective’, right) loves to purr and attack rowdy’s tail and grow bigger every time you look at him. this picture captures the detective’s inability to sit still in one place and rowdy’s exasperation at the goofy new thing we brought home.”

From a press release:

“Mayor Adrian M. Fenty and Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) Director Jesús Aguirre joined the Friends of 16th Street Heights, Ward 4 residents and dog enthusiasts for a groundbreaking of Upshur Dog Park, 4300 Arkansas Avenue.

“We are excited to begin work on this exciting new dog park,” said Mayor Adrian M. Fenty. “The dog park program is a great example of public-private partnerships that leads to additional resources and activities for all residents.”

DPR Director Jesús Aguirre stated, “DPR is proud to continue to build dogs parks across the District of Columbia. The groundbreaking of Upshur Dog Park is a landmark moment for pet owners in Ward 4 as they will soon be able to enjoy their first official dog park.”

The new 9,000 square foot dog park will be in ADA-compliance and boasts:

* Fencing and gates
* Landscaping
* A tool shed
* Benches and picnic tables
* A dog fountain and water bowls

When completed in October 2010, the $286,000 park will be maintained by a partnership between DPR and the Friends of 16th Street Heights, the sponsoring community organization.”

“Dear PoP,

I am looking for a reliable pet sitting service to watch our dog over the upcoming weekend as our usual caregivers are now unavailable. Would it be possible to ask your readers for recommendations? I’ve heard nightmare stories of services that disappointed, and I’m anxious to find someone reliable (and not ridiculously expensive). I’m particularly looking for a group that works within the SW/Eastern Market neighborhoods.”

I know there are folks who like Dogs by Day located at 1724 14th St, NW and Capitalpetsitters is supposed to be good for Capitol Hill. Who do you guys use? Anyone use a place near Eastern Market?

Dizzy

“Dizzy is a 3 year-old boxer mix with a funky white star on his chest. Though originally a stray puppy from Raleigh, North Carolina, his jazz-inspired name (after Dizzy Gillespie) and obvious star power make him a perfect fit here in DC.”

Cutie Pie

I call this one “Trouble with 39 Across”.

Penny

“This is Penny, a 1.5 year old retriever mix. She was rescued from a high-kill shelter in rural South Carolina. Now she lives near Dupont and enjoys destroying anything that squeaks, chasing tennis balls, rescuing fallen tortilla chips from the Lariol patio and pretending to be a fox.”

“Meet our boy Tucker! You can’t see it in the picture but he has a white-tipped tale like a fox and when he’s all curled up he looks like the Firefox logo.”

Munchkin

“Munchkin – Loves his urban garden!”

Dexter

“This is Dexter, a recent addition the neighborhood and a rescue puppy. He overcomes a birth defect by hopping along on 3 legs. Here he’s just chilling after another day hiking and chasing birds in Dolly Sods.”

“Dear PoP,

On July 25th you were kind enough to alert readers to a missing dog in Columbia Heights. I had seen the signs around my block and was delighted to read an update on your blog that the dog and owner had successfully been reunited. As a dog owner, I can barely imagine how upsetting it must be to have your dog go missing. That being said-I naturally assumed that the owner of this dog, overcome with the exuberance of being reunited with their beloved best friend, would take the time to walk back through the neighborhood and remove the signs that are plastered on every street corner. I feel that it is disrespectful to enlist the help of the community and then to spit in its face once you have achieved your objective.

I’d like to kindly suggest that the owner take their dog on a well deserved victory lap around Columbia Heights and remove all evidence of the traumatic event.”

Cash

Princess

“She was a stray that adopted me when she was knocked up with three kittens. She raised them all and when they were old enough I found them good homes. However, having grown very attached to her I couldn’t give her up. Even though she was a stray she is a very sociable cat and loves human attention. She also doesn’t realize when her tongue is sticking out.”

Mara

“She is a Catahoula Leopard Dog and is just as cool as her name is. Everyone is always stunned by her beautiful markings and different colored eyes. On top of that she is super smart and incredibly sweet, loving all humans and animals. She was rescued from a pound in West Virginia and is about 7 months old.”

Tyranny

“This is Tyranny. She moved to DC all the way from Puerto Rico (will this poor dog *ever* get to live in a state?!). She’s so ecstatic to be here….note the intensity of the tail wag.”

Lucien

Izma

“I’m Izma Enchilada, sometimes referred to as Lil EZ-E, or Zak Attack. I was saved from a kill shelter in the south where they believe all pit-bulls to be mean and ferocious animals. If you know me, you know I’m the exact opposite: I’m the biggest softy around these parts!”

“Dear PoP,

Could you please let dog walkers know that urine kills plants? In this heat, when most plants are already stressed, it only takes one small dose to kill a plant dead. I know everyone on your site admires the gardens of the day, and those of us who actually do garden our front yards would really appreciate it if our efforts were respected a little more. I know I don’t technically own my front yard, but I am the one that purchases and tends the plants there. I used to do the tree boxes around my house, but I’ve given that up as hopeless. My yard may be next if I can’t figure out how to keep the paws and the pee off my plants. Many thanks!”
