Thanks to a reader for sending on this great news from Culture Coffee:
Our motto is Coffee, Culture and Conversation…we want to get more people offline and in person and start forming that sense of community across all cultures. We plan to share our culture (African American) with others and look forward to having others share their culture with us…the guys at the Ethophian Deli two doors down have promised to host a Ethiopian Tea Ceremony (that should be fun).
Of course, we’ll be offering delicious coffee and espresso drinks, free Wi-Fi and LOTS of culture (spoken word/poetry slams, book readings, chess tournaments, panel discussions with various speakers, featured Cultures of the Month).
Sounds like an amazing addition to Kennedy Street. Updates as they get closer to opening.

In this morning’s post about Blue Banana closing, a reader mentions hearing a cigar bar could be going in just down the street at 3622 Georgia Ave. If true, think that would be a good addition to the block?

Blue Banana sports bar turned rock club opened up back in Dec. 2010. Thanks to all who sent word about their closing. I hear that a new management team is being brought in and they plan on reopening with a new concept. I also hear the patio will be expanded and a roof deck could be added. It is not clear how long renovations will take but I’ll be sure to update as more info becomes available.
It seems naming a sports bar, Blue Banana, from the film Pretty Woman wasn’t the best idea after all…
Looking forward to learning more about the new concept – and very excited about the potential for an expanded outdoor patio and roof deck!
Hard to believe it’s already been a year! And it keeps getting better – check out the new bar they put in the back patio. The patio and bar will open this Sunday around 5:30 for the Capital Bop’s Jazz gathering. The back patio and bar will then be open at 5:30pm daily.
And to celebrate their anniversary:
“We will be offering $1 Stella pints from 5:30 – 7:00 next Tuesday – Thursday (16-18) at our just completed patio bar. In addition, customers in our dining room will be able to purchase select bottles of wine at half price during this same time frame.”

From MPD:
This morning at approximately 12:30 AM, MPD units received 911 calls for the sounds of gunshots around 8th & Buchanan Streets, NW. Shortly thereafter, MPD units received the report of a shooting in the 4500 block of 9th Street, NW. Units responded and found an adult male suffering from non life-threatening gunshot wounds. The individual was transported to a local area hospital for treatment.
Fourth District detectives are investigating the shooting. Anyone with information is asked to call 1-888-919-CRIM[E] (1-888-919-2746) or 202-727-9099.
Ed. Note: Yesterday afternoon there were shots fired around 1pm on the 500 block of Buchanan St, NW.

A reader sends word of a shooting around 2pm on the 500 Block of Buchanan St, NW. MPD is on the scene and Buchanan is blocked off between Illinois and 5th. At this point it is not clear if anyone was hit but the report is of hearing multiple shots fired.
UPDATE from MPD:
“Just before 1pm, units responded for a sounds of gunshots call in the area of 5th and Buchanan Sts NW. Units located a vehicle in the area with a window shot out. No injured victims nor complainant were located.”
In late Feb. we learned the Farenheit condos were coming to the “Goins building” located at the corner of Georgia and Shepherd St, NW. Thanks to those who sent emails about the demo taking place.
