This one hurts. Lawrence’s II Petworth Carryout was located at the corner of Georgia and Shepherd St, NW. One of the few spots left that were good and cheap. Perhaps it was inevitable but it still hurts. Cause in addition to the good grub were the kindest faces. Petworthian captures it best “Gonna miss the ladies”:

Every first and third Thursday, Dan will make drinks from a classic cocktail manual. First up: drinks from a bootlegger’s guide, disguised as German poetry. There have long been rumors that a horse faced hillbilly with little personality had plans to open a bar in this long vacant space near the Blue Banana. Looks like he finally got it done and it’s called DC Reynolds (pronounced RAY-nolds, I believe). It’s a bit ordinary when you first walk in but it has a phenomenal back patio and a decent happy hour too. Definitely a great addition to the neighborhood!!

Not mincing words. Sadly, the article ends with: “Mainly, though, I’m frustrated that the Solis crew will soon close their 14th Street NW location, an apparent victim of gentrification.”
El Sol only opened up on 14th Street in the former Sisy’s space by Red Derby back in 2014. They opened their smaller 11th Street location (“A Real Mexican Restaurant Run by Real Mexicans Cooking in the Kitchen”) last September in the former El Sauce space.
However, in another article (thanks again to a reader for letting me know) the Post’s Tim Carman shares even more details about the move:
“Construction is already underway for Mezcalero Cocina Mexicana, a 72-seat restaurant that Alfredo and Jessica Solis hope to open in July…The potentially bad news? Mezcalero will be located one door down from Taqueria Habanero.”
Updates as they get closer to opening in July.

I have been organizing family bike rides in DC for nearly 5 years under my nom de guerre Kidical Mass DC, and have ridden a giant orange cargo bike around DC for nearly that long. Today that bike was stolen from in front of Bridges Public Charter School while I took my son inside to use the bathroom.
I’m heartbroken. This bike has been our family’s main mode of transportation for 4 years. It’s unique and deeply loved. I’ve been told that stolen cargo bikes are often taken for quick joyrides and then abandoned, so it may turn up in an alley or backyard in Petworth soon.”

“Dear PoPville,
I currently have $500 worth of tickets from dining in at the Petworth Wendy’s and want to make sure it does not happen to anyone else. I was ticketed twice while eating there for $250 each. The first ticket I never even received, I only saw it online, so I do not have my receipt. The second time though, I came out after dining in and had a ticket on my car. Luckily, I had a receipt and saved it. It showed that I had gotten food less than 30 minutes before I was ticketed. I did not think to speak to the manager that day because I did not realize there was anything they could do once the ticket was issued and I had to get to class. I just saved the receipt and thought it would be easy to fight through DC adjudication services. I was wrong. (more…)
