Future Concept: View from Au Bon Pain looking East.

From Amtrak:

“Amtrak is advancing a near-term comprehensive renovation of Washington Union Station’s intercity and commuter rail concourse, which will add approximately 20,000 square feet of new passenger space – nearly doubling the concourse’s current capacity.

Design is underway to upgrade passenger amenities including new restrooms, boarding gates, seating and a ClubAcela lounge. The design will also include new architectural features and natural light elements to enliven the space for travelers. The result will be a vastly reconfigured, modernized and unified concourse that will improve the passenger experience by providing better accessibility, circulation, wayfinding and multimodal connectivity. Amtrak today unveiled two conceptual renderings of the renovation.

While Union Station has served the region well for over a century, it is now operating beyond its capacity, particularly during rush hours and peak travel times. As such, implementing near-term solutions to gain capacity and alleviate congestion is imperative to maintaining safe and efficient station operations. (more…)

God dang it, they closed way back in November – how come nobody told me? Last month we learned about the ownership change in Columbia Heights. Their Friendship Heights location closed back in 2013 (now a Le Pain Quotidien.) Actually a Le Pain Quotidien would probably kill in NoMa…

In other breaking NoMa news – ok I’m kidding about the bus depot but why is the development taking so long?

Maybe not a terrible thing because their marketing is suspect:

“Dear PoPville,

Any idea what the delay is with the opening of Walgreens at Union Station? It’s looked ready for a while. Any information would be most appreciated by those of us who work/live nearby or travel through.”

One of our Union Station operatives reported on Friday:

“I spoke to a customer service rep. She claimed that they would be opening [this] “next week” but could not give me more information. She also could not provide any information about why there has been such a delay in opening. We will see whether this actually pans out!”

On Feb. 10th a reported “a gross, slightly scary experience around 9am on my walk to work. Walking on the north side of M St. NE between 5th and 6th”. Yesterday two more folks believe they ran into him:

“Earlier this morning around 9:20am I was walking towards the Noma Metro on M Street and 5th Street when I ran into I believe the same man. He was wearing a black ski mask and black jacket and had his private parts exposed. He seemed a bit odd as I approached to pass him on the side walk until I realized what he was doing. I immediately called the cops and informed them because I knew this has happened before and thought it was the same guy from when this happened on 2/10/16. Hopefully they can get him the help he needs!”

and

“We live near the corner of 6th and M ST NE and have reported him twice this week, once on Tuesday and once today. I called 911 about 4 times giving them updates on his location but DC police kept missing him. Both days he was pacing back and forth down M ST NE from the corner of 5th to Florida Ave. He was seen today moving from one side of M ST NE to the other based on the foot traffic that was coming. It appears he was targeting women. Both days we have seen him he has been out during the high traffic time from 830-930 or so. Hopefully they get this guy soon.”
