Ed. Note: Last week we noted the Adams Morgan location had opened on Columbia Road. So what other neighborhoods need a hardware store?

“After spending the evening with friends, Corporal Michael Schroeder, was found with wounds that are consistent with being attacked from behind and kicked. Cash was most likely taken, though his wallet and phone were untouched, but at this time it is unconfirmed. The details lead us to believe that he was knocked unconscious and dragged in between two parked cars and left to die in temperatures below freezing.”
A local Glover Park businessman passes a message on from the ANC rep for the area:
“Hello all,
When I saw this story posted on the Glover Park Listserve yesterday, I immediately checked with the Commander for MPD’s 2nd District because I too was surprised to have not heard about this assault. The answer I received from Commander Melvin Gresham is that the incident was being treated as an accident and not an assault. In other words, the police believe the marine fell and hit his head after a night out.
I am in no position to know whether the police are correct or if the marine’s family is correct in their belief that he was assaulted. But as people look at this story and draw their own conclusions and decide how to act, please know that there are apparently two sides to this story.

I was a close friend of Matt Shlonsky, the American University alum who was killed in the Shaw Metro shooting in August. Since that time, a group of Matt’s friends and I have established a Memorial Fund in his name with American University’s School of International Service. The Matt Shlonsky Memorial Fund was established within American University’s School of International Service this fall.
This event will be the second fundraiser for the Fund, and is scheduled for 7:00pm on February 11th at Town Hall in Glover Park [2340 Wisconsin Ave NW]. The goal is to raise an additional few thousand dollars, as well as spread awareness about the Fund and our goals. So far we have raised close to $25,000, which is half way to our goal of $50,000, at which point the Fund will exist in perpetuity.”

In 1990, the city had a few homegrown barbeque pits, but not many, and none served the distinctive “Washington barbeque” that founder John Snedden defined. The restaurant’s original barbeque sauce—still its house sauce today—marries a tomato base with plenty of onions and vinegar, still Snedden’s favorite not-sweet complement to chopped pork.
Phyllis Richman, then-restaurant reviewer for The Washington Post, came to visit after a few months. As she put it, ROCKLANDS has “some of the best barbequed meat and accompaniments north of the Carolinas and east of Texas” – a great review that nearly swamped the new restaurant. ROCKLANDS still cooks in the same manner she praised, including smoking only over wood (no gas), offering a limited and barbeque-true menu, and serving the original vinegary barbeque sauce to accompany its smoked meats.
