Update on Taqueria Local from a press release:

“Putting an innovative spin on Mexican classics, Taqueria Local, downtown D.C.’s new artisanal taco restaurant, will arrive with a mouthwatering menu of tacos, tostadas, burritos, salads, sides and soups, as well as a handful of desserts, in March.

Just like owner Antonis Karagounis’ other D.C. establishments — Echostage, Decades, Barcode, Ultrabar, Soundcheck and L8 — Taqueria Local is an authentically homegrown concept that’s sure to become one of Washington’s instant foodie favorites. Karagounis and partner Arman Amirshahi, who has nearly 25 years of hospitality experience, have tapped their longtime chef, Giovanni Orellana to helm the new eatery, which mixes modern, fast-casual vibes with the appeal of a classically authentic Mexican restaurant.

In addition to its extensive food menu, Taqueria Local will also serve a variety of Mexico’s iconic aguas frescas, bottled Mexican sodas, flavored margaritas, beer and wine.

Taqueria Local marks the initial management venture for Orellana, a D.C. food prep veteran from El Salvador with more than 14 years of experience and stints at Ceviche, Lima, Pesce, Posto and most recently, Barcode, on his extensive resume. In fact, Orellana’s weekly taco special at Barcode has regularly been one of the restaurant’s top-selling plates. (more…)

I was surprised to see Fast Eddie’s window papered over but when I called for details I was told they’d just be closed for renovations for the next month or two. Also while I was looking for more details I found this fantastic yelp review from Babs R.:

“Awesome burgers, great service!! We were in from out of town and this place was right across the street from the hotel. We weren’t interested in drinking, so I can’t comment on that, but we were both starving and dying of thirst. The waitress was on top of refills, we had 5/6 each, and the burger s were cooked to a perfect medium, which we asked for. We tried to go back, I think it was Saturday @ the same time, but the asshole bouncer out front just stood there like a retarded robot repeating”it’s a gentleman’s club”, “it’s a gentleman s club”. No chance for questions, like what are the hours or days? How did he know I wasn’t looking for a lap dance or applying for a job!!! Anyways, if your going for food it’s really good, extremely reasonable, with great service.”

Ed. Note: I do not supported using retarded as a pejorative but the rest of the review is pretty funny.

Danielle wrote yesterday:

“I’ve sent an email to Wawa about their oversight of the DC store in their free coffee promotion for all mid-Atlantic stores (MD and VA are included!)”

And a few hours later:

“I have heard back and Wawa has corrected this issue! Their response is below:

Have no fear… DC is definitely included in the free coffee celebration on Sunday! It was a mistake leaving it out of the release and I’ve updated and replaced it. thank you for reaching out and enjoy the big game!”

So props to Danielle, and props to Wawa for the quick fix!!

Thanks to Craig for passing on word straight from Joe & The Juice‘s HQ at Østergade 26A, Denmark:

“The first [15th and K Street, NW] is set to open in the end of Q1 2018. The second one [17th and L Street, NW] is also within 2018, but I can’t be more specific than that.”

Check out their menus here. Stay tuned for more specific dates as they are learned.

This is crazy, a reader reports on Saturday:

“Another casualty on 19th St between K and L. They’re packing it up today.”

This Bold Bite only opened back in October. This space is also formerly home to a Red Robin and Boloco burritos.

A call to the store immediately goes to a “user not available” message. The location is still listed on their website. Did anyone happen to notice if they were open this morning?

STAY TUNED.

Must’ve forgot to make them “gifts”.

From MPD:

Ken reports:

“I noticed that construction workers were putting up signage at the old Eatsa place at 17th/K NW. According to the signs, it’s a place called Taqueria/Local Taqueria. Their website just has a coming soon and a way to apply for jobs. Hopefully it’ll last longer than Eatsa!”

Eatsa’s “fully-automated faster food experience” closed back in October. Updates as the Taqueria gets closer to opening.
