15th and L Street, NW
Thanks to all who emailed about yesterday’s major street closures around 15th and L St, NW. (I was away from the computer and wasn’t able to post.) Though this morning a reader notes that the Play With Me firebox guerilla art was removed:
“…Anyway, when the bomb squad left, it was gone, so I’m guessing that they took it.”
Can’t image that was the cause for such a large closure:

Science Club Bar Manager Tony Tescadero writes:
“So yeah, I’ve been at Science for six years or so and concerning our closing…
The Golden Triangle/South Dupont just isn’t the same nightlife hub it used to be. Over the past couple years our happy hours have been solid, a lot of repeat customers, family ya know?
But what happens after happy hour is over? Dupont is flooded with these… I don’t know ‘millennials’… new to the city, and they weren’t really into a place that didn’t play much Top 40 and serve Bud Light.
We played Tribe, Mos Def, Deep House, NuDisco, Groove, tribal melodies, mild trap, break beats.
They wanted Beyoncé and Kesha.
When I first stepped into Science back in 2007, I immediately noticed that this space had no interest in marching to the beat of the nearby bars that catered to frat boys and mainstream stilettoed girls that swarmed the area.
Maybe shame on us for not adapting.
But no, I don’t know.
I was born here, (split being raised between here and The Bronx NY…(COOLIDGE COLTS!))
And it’s very frustrating to see this city kinda lose its identity, or rather its unique sense and become cookie cutter… Copy and paste. (more…)

A bit anti climactic but the liquor license placard for BLT Prime says:

19th Street’s ups and downs continues with word of Smith & Wollensky closing. Thanks to all who sent word. A reader writes over the weekend: “re-confirmed now, sign on door “closed permanently”. So, what theme from the National Restaurant Group would you like to see here… Seriously, where’s your favorite spot for steak?

Nooshi’s liquor license placard amendment says:
“Applicant requests expansion of Sidewalk Café to seat 50 patrons.”
I wish Greek Deli’s outdoor cafe would expand too but I’ll take it!
I dig it, though it did delay my walkabout for damn near 40 minutes…
The old Washington Post building was located at 15th and L St, NW. This is the view from L Street. Updates on the new (mostly) Fannie Mae Headquarters as construction progresses.

First we heard about Sophie’s Cuban and now sad news for next door neighbor Science Club. A reader reports Science Club owner Steve Maguire posted on facebook:
“Cannot even begin to describe the love I have for every kind soul that contributed to this place. Simply speechless. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.”

“No other details – just a 100+ comments thanking him for ten years of a great bar! He seems positive in the comments and owns the bar outright, so not sure why this seems so sudden…kind of weird. Hope he comes back with another space!”
Ed. Note: Science Club was one of the coolest spots new spots in the District when they first opened. Can’t believe that was 10 years ago. They will be missed by many.
