14th Street, NW between Columbia and Irving

“Dear PoPville,

MuralsDC put up a sign in front of Unity Health Care in Columbia Heights announcing a new mural project. Lots of artists working together to put up some murals.

In the process they’ve put caution tape up in the place where there was a shooting earlier this year, and more where earlier this week I walked past someone who was (unconscious?) from K2. It seems kind of heavy handed but at the same time, I’ve had four blessed days in a row of no street harassment here.

Before you ask, no, that’s Einstein holding spray paint on the alley wall, the lineart that defines his features is hard to see from far away.”

Somewhat related, Geovanny writes:

“I wanted to share this proposal for readers to sign to help ease the burden of homeless in the Columbia Heights neighborhood.

The proposals calls on Mayor Muriel Bowser declare a state of emergency for homelessness in Columbia Heights. With additional funding and community resources, one of the vacant DC USA spaces can serve the needs of homeless, including serving healthy meals, offering medical assistance, public restrooms and showers, and safe storage spaces.

I encourage the community to review the proposal and sign if you agree, and also leave feedback to continue this important discussion.”

Thanks to a reader for sending a photo of the coming soon signage for Chase Bank at the corner of 14th and Park Road, NW (next to the coming Old Navy in DCUSA.) And about the Urban Essentials closing in Logan. Thanks to another reader for sending word that it’ll also be a Chase Bank.

From an email:

Ed. Note: Back in July of 2016 we spoke about the New signs warning loiterers of ‘carnivorous plants’ at this location.

“Dear PoPville,

I live right near Columbia Heights Plaza, and over the last few weeks, I’ve noticed that the Columbia Heights Taproom–which you noted recently is in the middle of another facelift–is using a sprinkler to drench the homeless people that sometimes sit on the stone benches outside their property line.

This isn’t even subtle: The sprinklers are angled outward, and for many weeks were always directed at the same spot–wetting down the benches and not watering anything on their own property significantly. There is no other possible interpretation of why they’re running the sprinkler. (more…)

Thanks to Nita for sending word about Napoli Pasta Bar, great news for Park View/Pleasant Plains/Columbia Heights!!

“We are excited to recognize Napoli Pasta Bar, which opened in March of this year. The place is a real win for Sherman Ave., and the kitchen delivers serious and authentic Neapolitan fare. The neighborhood-friendly, laid back atmosphere makes for a fine pairing with the wonderfully prepared dishes.

For those not familiar with the accolade:

“Introduced in 1955, Bib Gourmand restaurants are selected by Michelin’s famously anonymous food inspectors, who choose restaurants serving high quality food on their menus and make it possible to order two courses and a glass of wine or dessert for $40 or less (tax and gratuity not included).”

Here is the complete Bib Gourmand Selection released yesterday: (more…)

3115 14th Street, NW at Kenyon

Thanks to Brian, Aman, Jess and all who messaged about the change coming to The Heights. Jess notes:

“The identity crisis of the Heights continues! First the destruction of the bar and the self serve beer, then the salad bar and pizza signs, then the corn dog appetizers, and now this… At this point it’s just funny.”

Ed. Note: Choong Man Chicken (& Seafood) opened up on H Street, NE in Spring 2017. Anyone know if it’s the same folks?
