On Saturday morning my daughter spotted this guy/gal walking up Veazey Street very casually and confidentially. S/he was beautiful – large and very healthy looking. Sadly, I couldn’t get my camera out until s/he turned around headed towards Reno Road. Then about 30 seconds later a hawk landed on a branch about ten feet from here. Awesome. Take note squirrels.

If you spot a hawk or any interesting wildlife around town, lunching or otherwise, and get a good photo please send in an email where you spotted it to [email protected] and I’ll add it to the queue. Hawks around Town is made possible by a generous grant from the Ben and Sylvia Gardner foundation.

The following was written by PoPville contributor David McAuley, founder of Short Articles about Long Meetings.

“We have absolutely no interest in doing Airbnb,” one of the owners of 3629 Windom Place NW said.

Still, rather than take the owner’s word for it, Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 3F/Van Ness voted to stipulate in its endorsement of zoning relief that the owners of the home will not use their planned basement apartment as a short-term homeshare. The unanimous vote of the ANC took place at its regularly-scheduled November 21 meeting.

3629 Windom Place is a single-family home located on a triangular lot at the corner of Windom Place and Reno Road. The couple living there wishes to convert the basement into a separate apartment and rent it out. They might be able to do so as a “matter of right”, that is, without zoning relief or ANC approval, except that they wish to put the door to the proposed basement apartment in the front of the building, and not the side or the rear. A front-facing door requires zoning relief, according to DC regulations.

The owners told the ANC they chose a front entrance because the alternatives would require extra lighting. The extra lighting would shine into the windows of their only neighbor’s house, they explained, while front entrance lighting, if any, would not. (more…)

From ANC3C06 Commissioner Angela Bradbery:

“Roadside Development is presenting its latest plans for the Fannie Mae redevelopment next Thursday, Oct. 26, from 7-9 p.m. at the McLean Gardens community center ballroom at 3811 Porter St. NW.

Roadside will show its “conceptual design,” which includes building locations and heights. Roadside will seek approval in November for this conceptual design from the Historic Preservation Review Board.

Next Thursday’s community meeting is being organized by Advisory Neighborhood Commission 3C. We are seeking input from residents before we make a recommendation about the conceptual design to the Historic Preservation Review Board.

You can get a sneak peek at Roadside’s conceptual design here.”

UrbanTurf reported:

“A Large Tract Review application filed with the Office of Planning (OP) shows how the ten-acre project will deliver over 700 residential units; 140-150 hotel rooms; 68,000 square feet of office and cultural-use space, including a theater; and over 200,000 square feet of retail, restaurants and services, including the District’s first Wegman’s grocery.”
