1338 U Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

You had mentioned the old Chinese restaurant closing (between 13th & 14th street–the one in the basement) and becoming a new Caribbean restaurant. I just tried the place and the food is great! Its a small mom and pop place (nothing fancy) but good food. I’m South Asian and for those who like and grew up eating goat curry, it has amazing goat curry.

Please post so they can get some business! With all the big fancy restaurants opening up on U street it would be great to see this mom and pop place do well!”

Ed. Note: Menu here.

A reader reported around 11pm:

“Shots fired behind the 1900 block of 13th Street, NW. Police are looking for bullet casings right now.”

MPD tells me that this occurred in the alley of the 1200 block of T Street, NW. After a call of the sounds of shots fired were made an MPD officer witnessed the subject toss the gun and “was placed under arrest for Carrying a Pistol without a License and Possession of Unregistered Ammunition.”

Thanks to Jeffrey for sending this entry:

“guess the md drivers have trouble parking, too (U Street)”

Update from MPD:

“At approximately 4am this morning, MPD units responded to the 1200 block of U Street NW for the report of a motor vehicle accident. A Nissan traveling eastbound on U Street struck a Toyota that was parked in the curb lane on the south side of the street, causing the Toyota to mount the curb. The driver of the Nissan was stopped and determined to be operating under the influence, and was placed under arrest. There were no injuries reported as a result of this collision.”

The iconic Duke Ellington mural was removed from the True Reformer building at 12th and U St, NW back in May 2012. At that time we were told repair could take up to a year.  In 2013 we learned that:

“Local Artist Byron Peck would create a replica of his Duke Ellington mural on U Street. The Commission looked at all of the options for preservation. The structure behind the mural was eroding. The best option is a replica and Peck has agreed. The goal is to have an unveiling and installation by Duke Ellington’s birthday in April 2014.”

And after a few more years I had completely given up hope. Thanks to U Street Buzz for sending us word that they heard it was coming back.

I inquired as well and hear that “weather permitting” the mural should return sometime this April!! Fingers crossed and stay tuned.
