Last week we noted the new signs for Dino’s Grotto and thought they’d be ready to open soon after peeking inside. Now we have a date – May 15th:

“Chef/Managing Partner Dean Gold and his Wife/ Managing Partner Kay Zimmerman are pleased to announce that Dino’s Grotto is ready to open in the Shaw neighborhood of Washington, DC! Dino’s Grotto pays homage to Dino, which had been a long standing favorite and much acclaimed rustic Italian restaurant located in Cleveland Park for eight years. This new casual neighborhood Italian establishment will serve 76 people on two floors. The lower level will feature a 10 person communal table alongside a 14 person bar. The 1st floor will feature a 10 person wine bar and table seating for 40. Opening Day is anticipated to be Thursday, May 15th, with the possibility of some “soft opening” nights in advance of that date when passersby might be able to drop in for a meal.

Compass Coffee’s facebook page says:

“Compass Coffee – Real good coffee coming to Washington, DC. Summer 2014.

We are a new cafe and roastery dedicated to making real good coffee. We import our beans from all over the world and roast them on site in our cafe to ensure we produce the best tasting coffee in the city.”

With La Colombe in Blagden Alley, The Coffee Bar at 12th and S St, NW and Wydown coming to 14th Street – Shaw is becoming a seriously solid coffee spot.

They’ll be right next door to Ivy and Coney:

Still have a bit to go – but nice progress from a former laundromat:

“Dear PoPville,

Last night there was a scheduled performance of “Big Tony’s Birthday Celebration” show which was supposed to be a celebration of DC music and was hosted by dave grohl. The acts listed included members of DC punk legends Bad Brains, Scream, and also included a set by Trouble Funk – A go-go legend of DC.

However, later in the night, the entire lineup of The Foo Fighters came on to play a 17 song, 2 hour set. One of the few times they’ve played in the last two years This was not announced ahead of time and was a surprise. Since Dave Grohl is from the area, it seemed appropriate.”

Ed. Note: Awesome.

Back in November of last year I posted some scuttlebutt about a Mintwood II restaurant from owners of Mintwood Place in Adams Morgan coming to Shaw in City Market at O. Happy to see that that scuttlebutt is now confirmed! From the Washington Post:

“Restaurateur Saied Azali and chef Cedric Maupillier have signed a lease to open a second concept together, at 801 O St. NW, otherwise known as City Market at O in Shaw. Yet to be named, the 120-seat dining room will be a riff on the business partners’ popular Mintwood Place, home to American food with a French accent.”

Now the only question left is whether or not Top Chef Winner Kevin Sbraga will also be opening up a spot in Shaw?
