“Dear PoPville,

I live on the 2nd floor of 800 P St, the west building of City Market at O. Early Saturday morning (July 15th), a 6-inch pipe on or at the roof level burst, damaging maybe 3/4 of the apartments (some are near total losses). The building owners, the construction company, and management do not seem to want the city involved, and even tried to prevent residents whose units were flooding from calling the fire department. HUGE mess throughout the building, poor communication from management, and parades of workers filing throughout the building day and night, going apartment to apartment and ripping up flooring, drilling holes in walls, and leaving large industrial fans and dehumidifiers in place. Thanks to Jordan for sending:

“For about a month there have been about 10 or so vendors setting up every Saturday/Sunday in the Howard University parking lots across from Barnes and Noble on Georgia Ave (2200 block).

Definitely a mix of vendors with really random things — plants, leather purses, records, miscellaneous rugs, furniture, and even a vendor with laundry detergent and t-shirts. It doesn’t seem to get a ton of foot traffic–which is too bad since it’s nice to see and support people making use of an empty lot to do something community-friendly.”

The Whitman came to life in 2006, during a wave of development in Mount Vernon around the (then new) Convention Center. Large multi-unit high amenity residential buildings popped up in the area seemingly overnight and transformed the downtown Mass Avenue corridor. (more…)

Whoa. Thanks to everyone who messaged me about the big Town news:

Ed. Note: Recently three gay bars have opened nearby – Trade (below Black Whiskey), Dirty Goose on U Street, and Uproar on Florida Ave. (Not to mention Nellie’s.) But this is gonna be a tough one to digest for many.

1501 9th Street, NW at P St.

Well last night anyway. Thank God this wasn’t so much worse. Sarah reports around 11pm:

“A black SUV crashed into the patio of Chaplin’s tonight and then sped north up 9th St…. doesn’t look like anyone was hurt thankfully…”
