1336 9th St, NW at O Street

Thanks to Matt for emailing word. This is the former Piassa and Azi’s space (and a few others.) Maxwell’s website says:

“Maxwell Park is a wine bar located in the heart of Washington DC’s historic Shaw neighborhood devoted to the adventurous imbiber. The brainchild of Sommelier Brent Kroll, Maxwell Park aims to deliver a one-two punch of refined fun + expert execution by way of a constant rotation of glasses, bottles, guest chefs, dishes, visiting somms, winemakers and more.

The bar features 50 or so wines by the glass, about half of which rotate out according the month’s theme – and all of which are served at one of four optimal temps using a crazy high-tech refrigeration system. (more…)

From an email:

“Nothing is better than a great Pop-Up Bar. On June 21st, Derek Brown and Angie Fetherston’s Drink Company will transform its trio of Shaw establishments–Mockingbird Hill, Southern Efficiency and Eat the Rich into the Game of Thrones-inspired North, Hall of Faces and The King’s Landing respectively.

Of course, this will be popular. There will be queuing. As the Lannister faithful line up to enjoy the fabulous atmosphere and cocktails, the pop-ups’ 7th Street neighbor, Drift on 7th, is poised to serve those who may become a little peckish while waiting for their turn to imbibe. Following The Drink Company’s lead, and in keeping with the Game of Thrones theme, Drift on 7th will offer some easy-to-eat apps. Options include “King of the North Mussels;” “Decary’s Wings,” chicken wings served just right; “Drinklage Shot,” a special libation from the bar; “Lannister Gold Corn,” Drift’s rendition of Crazy Corn and”Children of the Forrest & Dragons,” a GOT inspired version of their classic, ‘Tots and Tentacles.’ Those on line can have a place-saver and stop in for a quick bite to eat in or take out to share with their comrades while they prepare for their TV show inspired cocktail experience that will no doubt be superb. “Dear PoPville,

I walked by The Shay today and saw that signs have gone up for Argent – a workwear store for women – in the former Kit & Ace space. They’ve already opened a pop-up shop around the corner on 9th above Ride. Glad to see the space won’t be sitting empty for long.”

Back in February we first learned about Rito Loco’s roof deck plans. They’re really far along now. I’m told they could be open in just a few weeks if not sooner. Also stand by for an upgrade to their menu – I’m hearing paella could be in the mix. In the meantime – see how the deck is shaping up:

Ed. Note: IMM on H is on H Street of course and IMM on Georgia is coming to Brightwood. You can see their menus here.

Located in the downtown NW neighborhood of Shaw, surrounded by LeDroit Park, Bloomingdale, Truxton Circle, and Logan Circle, New Jersey Ave NW is a relatively busy street. The front yards on this part of New Jersey Ave NW are deep, however, so the houses are considerably set back from traffic. (more…)

Update:

1843 7th St, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what’s going on with Eat the Rich, Mockingbird Hill, and Southern Efficiency? I walked by the other day and it looks like they’re all closed for good (white butcher paper covering the windows), and their websites aren’t working. Have these businesses shuttered?”

From a press release:

“The most anticipated pop-up of the summer is coming. Beginning June 21st, Drink Company and Ommegang Brewery present the Game of Thrones Pop-Up Bar (PUB), in the spaces formerly known as Mockingbird Hill, Southern Efficiency, and Eat the Rich (1839-1843 7th Street NW). (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Just read this article [from Eater DC]:

The new neighborhood eatery is actually a longtime fixture in Florida, debuting in Boca Raton in 1985.

Named V & S Italian Deli, the originator was started by Sal Falcone and his brother just steps away from the beach.

Now, more than 20 years later, he’s convinced Falcone to install a second version of the mom-and-pop joint in the District — which Seligman believes is lacking in authentic Italian delis with fresh-baked breads.

and quickly realized that my hometown deli is coming to DC! Figured I’d pass the good news along, as a new quality food place is always welcome in Shaw. If this place can replicate what they do in Florida we are all in for a treat. Some of the best italian subs you will get anywhere. I haven’t been yet but am excited to try it ASAP!
