“For about a month there have been about 10 or so vendors setting up every Saturday/Sunday in the Howard University parking lots across from Barnes and Noble on Georgia Ave (2200 block).

Definitely a mix of vendors with really random things — plants, leather purses, records, miscellaneous rugs, furniture, and even a vendor with laundry detergent and t-shirts. It doesn’t seem to get a ton of foot traffic–which is too bad since it’s nice to see and support people making use of an empty lot to do something community-friendly.”

The Whitman came to life in 2006, during a wave of development in Mount Vernon around the (then new) Convention Center. Large multi-unit high amenity residential buildings popped up in the area seemingly overnight and transformed the downtown Mass Avenue corridor. (more…)

2009 8th Street, NW (off Florida Ave) courtesy Town

Whoa. Thanks to everyone who messaged me about the big Town news:

Ed. Note: Recently three gay bars have opened nearby – Trade (below Black Whiskey), Dirty Goose on U Street, and Uproar on Florida Ave. (Not to mention Nellie’s.) But this is gonna be a tough one to digest for many.

1501 9th Street, NW at P St.

Well last night anyway. Thank God this wasn’t so much worse. Sarah reports around 11pm:

“A black SUV crashed into the patio of Chaplin’s tonight and then sped north up 9th St…. doesn’t look like anyone was hurt thankfully…”

Thanks to Matt for emailing word. This is the former Piassa and Azi’s space (and a few others.) Maxwell’s website says:

“Maxwell Park is a wine bar located in the heart of Washington DC’s historic Shaw neighborhood devoted to the adventurous imbiber. The brainchild of Sommelier Brent Kroll, Maxwell Park aims to deliver a one-two punch of refined fun + expert execution by way of a constant rotation of glasses, bottles, guest chefs, dishes, visiting somms, winemakers and more.

The bar features 50 or so wines by the glass, about half of which rotate out according the month’s theme – and all of which are served at one of four optimal temps using a crazy high-tech refrigeration system. (more…)

1819 7th Street, NW via Drift on 7th

From an email:

“Nothing is better than a great Pop-Up Bar. On June 21st, Derek Brown and Angie Fetherston’s Drink Company will transform its trio of Shaw establishments–Mockingbird Hill, Southern Efficiency and Eat the Rich into the Game of Thrones-inspired North, Hall of Faces and The King’s Landing respectively.

Of course, this will be popular. There will be queuing. As the Lannister faithful line up to enjoy the fabulous atmosphere and cocktails, the pop-ups’ 7th Street neighbor, Drift on 7th, is poised to serve those who may become a little peckish while waiting for their turn to imbibe. Following The Drink Company’s lead, and in keeping with the Game of Thrones theme, Drift on 7th will offer some easy-to-eat apps. Options include “King of the North Mussels;” “Decary’s Wings,” chicken wings served just right; “Drinklage Shot,” a special libation from the bar; “Lannister Gold Corn,” Drift’s rendition of Crazy Corn and”Children of the Forrest & Dragons,” a GOT inspired version of their classic, ‘Tots and Tentacles.’ Those on line can have a place-saver and stop in for a quick bite to eat in or take out to share with their comrades while they prepare for their TV show inspired cocktail experience that will no doubt be superb.
