From Crane & Turtle:

“After much careful consideration, Crane & Turtle has decided to close our doors on Sunday, April 24, 2016.

Husband & wife team, Executive Chef Makoto Hamamura & Pastry Chef Katy Kinch, will be relocating to New York to pursue future career opportunities and to be closer to family. Chef Makoto (whose mother and aunt are named Crane and Turtle, respectively, in Japanese) is so intertwined in the identity and success of the restaurant that no replacement will do.

We are proud of the work we have done to create a unique dining experience that combined all of our team’s passions: chef-driven inventive cuisine, engaging service, exceptional wines & beverages, thoughtful design, and most importantly, camaraderie & community.

We feel truly honored to have been a part of special moments in our guests’ lives ranging from engagements to birthdays to a memorable night out with dear friends. We hope that you will look back on an evening spent at Crane & Turtle with same fondness as we all will.

We would like to especially applaud all of our remarkable staff that has worked so diligently everyday. Crane & Turtle could have never accomplished the high degree of critical acclaim without each and every one of you.

We cannot thank Petworth enough for welcoming us with open arms and not only being loyal patrons, but becoming our friends. This is an incredible neighborhood with so much heart. We feel very privileged to have called it “home.”

We are looking forward to the next few weeks of service. We see this time as a period of celebration. We certainly hope that you will be a part of it.

Thank you all & cheers, The Crane & Turtle Family”

“Dear PoPville,

This evening, this little guy (photo attached) wandered into my yard and was limping. He must be from 16th Street Heights/Petworth, as he has a Petworth Animal Hospital vaccine tag. I’ve posted to our neighborhood listserves, but no one recognizes him. We have given him a bath and a meal for the evening, but surely his real family misses him! I can be reached at [email protected].”

Armed Forces Retirement Home Bureaucracy?

“My father submitted an application for admission to the Armed Forces Retirement Home (Old Soldiers’ Home) here in Petworth nearly five months ago. He’s qualified under their published admission guidelines, and I paid the Public Affairs office a visit before he initiated the application process to ask for clarification on the one issue that could have disqualified him (he suffers from PTSD as a result of his time in Vietnam, and I asked for clarification on whether or not PTSD is a ‘psychiatric’ condition and would preclude his admission. It is not, and would not, according to one representative.) (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Since there were some recent questions on the progress of Jackie Greenbaum’s new venture on 14th St., Little Cocos, I thought I’d send along this picture from this afternoon. Looks like they’re building a roof deck (which looks similar to El Chuchos’).”

Back in January we learned that Jackie’s was closing at the end of March:

The closure is intended to coincide with the opening of Greenbaum’s new Italian restaurant, Little Coco’s, due to open in Petworth DC in the spring. Chef Adam Harvey will be the Executive Chef of the new restaurant, which will serve modern Italian cuisine ranging from creative pizzas to regional dishes. Most of the kitchen and service staff from Jackie’s will relocate to Little Coco’s. “We’re passing the torch from Jackie’s to Little Coco’s,” said Greenbaum, “and bringing the creativity we were known for at Jackie’s to Italian cuisine.”

As for the planned roof deck: “It’ll be a three season roof deck just like they have at El Chucho.”

“Dear PoPville,

Every February, I have a big birthday party for my Cavalier King Charles spaniel, Kingsley, and invite Petworth dogs and their humans to come celebrate.

Last year I had 22 dogs in my row house! All are well-behaved, mooch at the treat table (I bake organic biscuits for them), and have a blast tearing open a piñata filled with more smelly dog biscuits.

Each year there’s a different party theme. This year it’s Star Wars, since Kingsley’s turning 7.

(I will also mention here Kingsley is a National canine agility champion — the only dog in Washington, DC with that title!)”

Ed. Note: While this might be a bit unusual, this is the best – anyone of you self hating, insufferable curmudgeons tempted to be rude in the comments can just click the little ‘x’ in the right hand corner of the page. Thanks.

“fight with knife at Georgia Ave Metro station on Saturday night”

“About 7PM Saturday a group of about 10 teenage girls began fighting near the corner of New Hampshire and Georgia (actually on the west side of Rock Creek Church Road). It was a fairly big incident and about a dozen people witnessed it. At one point, one of the girls was dragged into the street and the other girls began stomping her in the face. One the girls involved in the fight pulled out a butcher knife and a hammer and began wildly screaming. I called 911 and timed the police response at 6 minutes. The first police cars arrived on the scene and the girls scattered right in front of them. The girl openly wielding the knife and hammer threw them down behind the zip cars on Rock Creek Church Road, 10 feet in front of the police. (more…)
