no smoking

“Dear PoPville,

We live in a rowhouse in Petworth, next door to a heavy pot smoker. Even when all of our doors and windows are closed, our house still smells like his pot. This is happening every day. it is a big problem for us because we have an 11-month old, and we’re pretty sure babies should not be exposed to pot smoke. We’ve talked to our neighbor about it, but he is not willing to accommodate us. The smell seems to be coming through the basement, but we don’t understand how.

Can pot smoke go through brick walls? We’ve been trying to fill in the gaps in the mortar but that doesnt seem to be making any difference. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has had this problem, and if they have any suggestions. How is his pot smoke getting into our house? Could an air purifier get rid of the smell? Is there anything else we should be trying?”

“Dear PoPville,

Over the last month or so on my walk home from the Petworth metro I’ve seen at least 8 instances of cars with their back windows broken into. Every time these cars have been parked on the 3600 block of Georgia Ave directly next to the CVS (across from Fisherman of Men Church) in that stretch of 8-10 parking spaces before you hit Princeton Place. I have never seen it happen before this and I think some of the times it’s happening in broad daylight which is crazy to me considering how busy the street is.

I had my car window smashed in a couple years ago despite there being nothing of value in the car to steal and it was such a bummer, so I wish I could warn these people before they decide to park in these spots! Obviously people will continue to park there, but at least they know there’s a risk involved. Can CVS post notices on their side wall warning that there’s been a string of break-ins in those spots? Considering that that CVS is always a mess, I’m less than optimistic that they’d do anything about it; but I’d just hate to sit idly by as it happens to more people. Is there anything that we can do?”

“Walking through this neighborhood lately is a practice in dodging running rats. It’s like the Tori Amos video…

There are rats everywhere in neighborhoods by Georgia Avenue and New Hampshire and they’re frickin huge, larger than they’ve ever been since I’ve lived there in 8 years!

I suspect a lot of it has to do with us having only 2 trash pickup days per week and limited trash bins on public streets, especially by bus stops. It’s reached an epidemic level now, and they’re not afraid of humans at all. Dogs

I wonder if they’re mostly displaced residents from SoutWest with all the waterfront construction, but the city needs to do something fast about this, it’s embarrassing to invite friends over because they’re literally running everywhere even in the daytime. They’ve also been observed running into holes at the warehouse building next to sweet mango cafe by me on my way home from work, I can’t imagine what’s going on there, but it certainly doesn’t make me hungry.”
