“The Citi Open has had Grand Slam champions before. Arthur Ashe, Jimmy Connors, Ivan Lendl, Andre Agassi all won multiple Slams, but not 20!

That changed this morning, when tournament officials announced that all-time great and 20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal will make his Washington debut this summer at the 2021 Citi Open, which will be held this year from July 31 – August 8 at the Rock Creek Park Tennis Center, heralding a historic return of Washington’s summer tennis tradition for the 52nd year.

Currently ranked No. 3 in the world, Nadal is arguably the greatest tennis player in the history of the sport. (more…)

“It’s almost peak bloom at Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens! The National Park Service invites you to join us online to celebrate the blooming of the lotus and water lilies at the 2021 Virtual Lotus and Water Lily Festival. The online festivities officially kick off on July 8 and feature videos, activities and interactive events through the end of the month. Online events can be found on the Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens Facebook, and the Lotus and Water Lily Festival website.

“Rollerskating in DC?”

“Dear PoPville,

The super nice weather today is inspiring me to look into more outdoorsy activities. I have a pair of roller skates I haven’t used in about a year or so and was wondering if you had any recommendations of where to skate around the District? The National Mall is an obvious first choice but I wanted to see if anybody had any other spots they’d recommend.”

The Bombay Club closed “for a total renovation, reopening for service on Monday, August 2”

Dang It, Sullivan’s Toys and Art Supplies Really is Closing

I’ve been hearing rumors that Sullivan’s was not doing too well for years. I was told a while ago that they’d be closing sometime this July but I was hoping it was another false alarm and/or that the owners would post a note on their Facebook which I could include, alas there is not (I emailed as well.)

At any rate, there are now major discounts at the store and the shelves are getting bare. If you want to say goodbye, I’d hurry. An employee I spoke to did say they were looking for a new location but they did not find one yet so obviously stay tuned on that front. This is a very sad parting for those with little kids (and artists) or just those who are little kids at heart. Sullivan’s is the type of retail that make our neighborhoods so great. Their leaving here is a sad day indeed. This is not the first time they’ve moved so hoping they find a new space soon. Stay tuned.

“Something nice taking over Harpeth Swill?”

I saw there was a story on Harpeth Swill closing, do you have any idea what is replacing it? Lots of plants outside that seem new, and a new name “Coin Des Poetes?”

The “poets corner” almost reminds me a bit of the old sarcastic murals from Shaw (Slum Historique) at 9th and Q and Rhode Island, NW. Here’s a photo I took of that from 2008 since completely renovated: (more…)

“17th Street now predominantly vacant of it eatery structures” Update: “will be back in week or so”

Update ANC Rep Randy Downs: “Not to fret. The StrEATeries will be back in week or so after necessary roadway construction to officially designate them StrEATery zones.

#17thStNW will be the first location in the city to make this happen.”

Thanks to Vicky and Janine for sending: “all the streateries on 17th gone?!”

Yesterday we learned that Le Diplomate’s Q Street streatery had been removed though the larger 14th Street side remains. (more…)
