202 M Street, SE

The eagerly anticipated Park Tavern has finally opened at 202 M Street, SE in Navy Yard. Thanks to all who sent emails. Park Tavern joins the recently opened Gordon Biersch brewery near the baseball stadium.

Anyone happen to stop by Park Tavern yesterday?

Ed. Note: This is one of Xavier Cervera’s restaurants that recently sold to a Boston equity firm. Capitol Hill Corner reported:

The equity group that bought out Cervera is reportedly headed by his brother and has other restaurant franchises. Xavier’s brother is currently in Washington and is actively managing the restaurant group. Part of the deal was Xavier’s continued involvement in the management as a consultant.

Last week a commenter pined for a movie theater in Columbia Heights (I also wondered about that possibility back in 2009.) On March 1st, Navy Yard ANC Rep David Garber posted a rendering for a proposed movie theater in Navy Yard:

“Curious to hear what you think of the design for this new 16-screen ShowPlace ICON movie theater near the ballpark!”

Personally I think a movie theater would do very well in Navy Yard as more and more development continues to sprout near the baseball stadium and coming soon to the nearby SW Waterfront as well. Anyway, it got me thinking about what other neighborhoods – could realistically – support a movie theater? I think NoMa probably could as well. Which neighborhoods do you think could support a 16 screen theater? How ’bout a smaller independent two screen theater like West End Cinema?

From a press release:

New Belgium Brewing today announced the long-awaited Tour de Fat 2013 schedule. The tour, now in its 14th year, will spin into 12 cities across the nation. This daylong festival in the park celebrates the bicycle, showcases New Belgium beers, and provides eclectic and engaging entertainment for all. The event is free, yet all proceeds from food and beer go to local biking groups. Over its course, Tour de Fat has raised more than $2 million for nonprofit organizations.

Each festival kicks off with a police-escorted bicycle parade through city streets in celebration of the bike. Costumes are encouraged but not mandatory, though the truly aware come prepared. Each parade route is designed for people of all skill levels, wrapping up at the park for a day of both sensory stimulation and relaxation.

After the parade, the festival stages heat up with national musical acts, touring comedy groups, artistic ensembles and unexpected entertainment. New this year is the opportunity to heighten your beer knowledge through beer contests, providing the chance to explore new brews and revel in a unique lineup of New Belgium selections. Kids of all ages can test their bicycle prowess on art bikes, dance in the grass and explore a wide variety of games and activities, such as giant versions of telephone and Plinko.

“Tour De Fat brings together entire communities to celebrate the bike as a vehicle for social change and good-time fun,” said Matt Kowal, New Belgium Brewing’s Tour de Fat Impresario. “This is a chance to see world-class entertainment in your own backyard with a beer in hand while you raise money for bike advocacy. That’s like a win-win-win situation.”

One brave role model in each city will volunteer to trade their car for a bike and live car-free for at least one year. With a ceremonial pledge and a handing over of car keys, the celebrated figure commits to a year of human transport on the fully loaded commuter bike of their choosing. The crowd goes wild and the seed is planted: one inspired person on two wheels can make a difference in each of our communities.

Car-for-Bike Swappers are chosen after submitting an application describing why they are ready to give up their vehicle for the gift of two wheels: www.newbelgium.com/tour-de-fat.

And in other Navy Yard News – thanks to a reader for sending coming soon signage for Nando Peri Peri coming to the Boilermaker building:

From a press release:

Nando’s Peri-Peri, the fast growing international chicken restaurant, is opening its doors at a new location in Washington, DC’s renovated Boilermaker Building at The Yards. The restaurant, scheduled to open in June 2013, will occupy 2,866 square feet and offer patio seating for those who want to enjoy the heat this summer. This will be the flame-grilled chicken restaurant’s twelfth location in the United States, following the March 2013 opening of its first Baltimore location.

Originally a naval industrial building, the Boilermaker building is undergoing an extensive renovation and will contain 34,000 of Retail Square Feet. Forest City is developing the Boilermaker Shops, which will include the following restaurants:

Nando’s Peri-‐Peri, BlueJacket brewpub, Buzz Bakery, Willie’s Brew & ‘Que, among others.

We judged their Dupont location back in Sept. 2010.

I am blown away by how awesome the Lumber Shed development is starting to look. In early Dec. ’12 we learned that Agua 301 Mexican restaurant from the owners of Zest will be opening up here in addition to an Italian resaurant – Osteria Morini. There is no doubt this going to be one of the coolest spots in DC.
