Quiznos shrinking presence in DC continues. The one at 8th and M St, SE (at the very bottom of Barracks Row toward Navy Yard) closed at the end of December. Looking forward to seeing who takes this space.

Forest City Washington, developer of The Yards, announced today the signing of an additional sit-down restaurant to open in mid-summer 2013 in The Lumber Shed, an adaptive reuse component of the massive mixed-use redevelopment project located near Nationals Park in the Capitol Riverfront. To be known as Agua 301, it will feature Modern Mexican cuisine, according to the new restaurant’s owners.
The 3600 SF restaurant is the latest creation of DC’s Amanda and Stephen Briggs and David Bonior, residents of nearby Capitol Hill and creators/owners of the popular Zest Bistro on 8th Street SE. Zest’s reputation as a welcoming, family-friendly place will be apparent at Agua 301 as well, only now with a Modern Mexican flair. The restaurant’s name comes from a blend of the cuisine, its location near the waterfront and the address of The Lumber Shed, 301 Water Street SE. The menu is being developed by Dot Steck, executive chef at Zest Bistro.
Currently under construction, the Lumber Shed is an historic, former Navy Yard industrial building which is being transformed by Forest City into the latest mixed-use component of The Yards. Upon completion in summer 2013, The Lumber Shed will feature space for five restaurants on its ground level with office space on its second level. The building’s floor to ceiling glass façade will take ample advantage of the surrounding views of the award-winning Yards Park, as well as the riverfront.
Agua 301 will occupy the southwest corner of The Lumber Shed with great views of the iconic Yards Park bridge and riverfront from both the light-filled dining room as well as Agua 301’s outside/parkside dining area. Osteria Morini, a Northern Italian restaurant concept from renowned New York City Chef Michael White, was announced in early 2012 as also opening at The Lumber Shed in summer 2013.

A Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant is coming to 100 M Street, SE near the baseball stadium and Navy Yard metro. The liquor license application says:
“New full service restaurant and brewpub with occasional live music. Serving American cuisine, including steaks and seafood. Total Occupancy Load is 346, number of seats inside is 326, number of Sidewalk Café seats is 26, and number of Summer Garden seats is 64.”

The ice skating rink will officially open at noon on Friday with free skating from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm. Come watch ice performances at the top of every hour for several hours on Friday and Saturday. Many activities and performances will take place on Saturday, including music by The Singing Lizard, John Henry and Justin Traywick; face painting and recycled art by SCRAP DC; and fitness classes and a kids obstacle course provided by Results Gym.

Gordon Biersch currently has a DC location at 900 F Street, NW. Any fans of Gordon Biersch?

Wow that’s looking awesome. DC’s becoming an ice rink mecca. I’m also eager to see how the Park Tavern restaurant turns out there.

Grosvenor Americas (GA) and Skanska USA Commercial Development Inc. today announced plans for a mixed-use project of more than 650,000 square feet directly north of the new Washington Nationals ballpark in the Capitol Riverfront district of Washington, DC.
The site, which offers direct access to Metrorail’s Navy Yard station, comprises the eastern half of Square 701, bounded by N Street, SE to the south, M Street on the north, 1st Street on the east, and Cushing Place on the west.
On October 1, 2012, the Washington, DC Zoning Commission supported plans with minor modifications for this mixed-use development in conformance with the District’s Capitol Gateway Overlay District. Final approval is expected later in the month. On September 10, the project received support from Advisory Neighborhood Commission 6D. The plans allow:
· A 224,000 SF Class A office building, to be developed by Skanska on the northern end of the site fronting M Street. This building, with direct access to the Metro station, is designed to meet the criteria for LEED Platinum certification and include 11,000 SF of ground-level retail space, a green roof, rooftop terrace, and below-grade parking for over 140 cars.
· A 170-key hotel, to be developed by GA directly south of the office building fronting 1st Street.
· Two residential buildings with 285 units, 23 of which are designated affordable dwelling units. The two structures, to be developed by GA, would be separated by a courtyard and connected by a trellised glass bridge. This new community would feature a green roof as well as a rooftop pool, spa, and garden terrace. It would provide approximately 180 below-grade parking spaces
· 43,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level of the office, hotel, and residential buildings, as well as in a separate two-level structure to be developed by GA on the corner of 1st and N Streets.

I’ve been curious about this week’s question for a while. It has me stumped. While I know that not everyone likes the name NoMa, I think it’s fair to say that it has been adopted by most folks. I know some still pine for Swampoodle but I think NoMa is staying for good. In contrast not one person I know calls Navy Yard – the Capitol Riverfront. Some people I know now call it the ball park but most have stuck with Navy Yard. Both neighborhoods have BIDs and banners. Both neighborhoods have had and continue to have major developments. So why do you think NoMa has stuck while Capitol Riverfront hasn’t?
