Huzzah!! I’ve been having lots of folks asking for updates on this.

From a press release:

“Calling all kids and their canine friends! The NoMa Parks Foundation will celebrate the completion of Swampoodle Park with an inaugural Wallholla climb and dog procession on the morning of Saturday, November 17, at 11:00 a.m. Located at the intersection of 3rd and L streets NE, the 8,000-plus-square-foot park — previously a vacant lot for which condominiums were once planned — offers a play structure for children, a dedicated space for dogs, and public seating, as well as trees and other plantings. Swampoodle Park was designed by District landscape architecture firm Lee and Associates, with substantial input from the NoMa community provided through multiple public meetings and surveys. From MPD:

“Unfortunately we are currently investigating a shooting that occurred in the Unit block of Massachusetts Ave. NE this evening. One adult male was transported to the hospital. That block remains closed to traffic. We will provide updates as we are able.”

Ed. Note: In early September there was also a shooting near Union Station.

From the Washington Post:

“A man who was shot multiple times Wednesday night in front of Union Station has died and the attack is being investigated as a homicide, according to D.C. police.”

Perhaps related to many messages I got along these lines:

“any reason I just heard the US Capitol alert siren go off? Typically they test it on Saturdays- Halloween at 11 pm seems to be a bad time to test it…”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Bowser’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced five new pick-up/drop-off pilot locations following the successful Connecticut Avenue Pick-up/Drop-off Zone Night Life Pilot. Following a 30-day notice and comment period, the Administration will launch the new 24-hour passenger and commercial loading zones in high-demand areas.

“Our goal with the expansion of this pilot is to reduce conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists,” said Mayor Bowser. “By rethinking how we move people and goods between the street and the sidewalk, we can better adapt to a changing transportation landscape and find new ways to work together to meet our Vision Zero goals.”

The new pilot locations will be exclusively used for pick-up/drop-off and commercial loading 24 hours a day. (more…)

Rain rendering via NoMa BID

From an email:

“Today the NoMa Parks Foundation officially opens the Rain light installation in the M Street NE underpass. The illumination event takes place this evening at the corner of M Street and Delaware Avenue NE at 6:30 p.m.

From a press release:

“The NoMa Parks Foundation turned on the power today for Rain, a dynamic light installation in the M Street NE railway underpass. Comprising 4,000 LED-powered polycarbonate rods suspended above the underpass sidewalks, the artwork will illuminate the space 24 hours a day and pulse like gentle waves of rainfall in response to the flow of vehicular traffic beneath the elevated tracks. Rain is the first of the NoMa Parks Foundation’s four planned underpass “art parks” to open and was designed by Thurlow Small Architecture of Oakland, California, working in conjunction with Dutch firm NIO architecten in response to an international competition held by the Foundation. “Dear PoPville,

I had an unfortunate incident Saturday around 5 PM in the 1 St NE separated bike lane in NoMA. Uber and Lyft drivers blocking the lane is a constant occurrence on weekends and unfortunately there is no enforcement by the city. As a result, I try and just remind drivers in a friendly way they they’re creating a hazard by parking here. I always try to give everyone the benefit of the doubt and just ask they not do it again. No one is going to feel like complying with the law if they get screamed at, even if they’re in the wrong.

Saturday, however, I encountered a stop Lyft in the lane (it was obvious based on the app the driver had mounted to the dash). When I tried to quickly remind the driver he shouldn’t be in the lane, one of the passengers became belligerent, cursing at me and then came around the vehicle, put his hands on me, and shoved me. Lily reports:

“Spotted on public sidewalk in DC. Never seen a can’t walk dog sign before, even for private property. It’s near the housing administration building on M & N Capitol. But it’s not posted ON any property.”

I’ve never seen a sign like this either. It looks like a city sign though. Anyone ever see a sign like this before? Anyway, doesn’t seem like it can be enforced but still odd.

From a press release:

“The Union Market District continues its commitment to nurturing burgeoning local businesses with the arrival of The Village Cafe (1272 5th Street NE), slated for a soft opening on October 9, followed by a grand opening on October 23.

When founders and Washington natives Kevon King, Mahammad Mangum and Ryan Williams met as kids, they bonded at Woodrow Wilson High School, where they pursued their passions in the business, creative and culinary fields, respectively.

Recognizing that cafés are the ultimate social gathering place, the trio embarked upon opening their own establishment that would not only bring quality food and drink to underserved communities, but that would also uplift the “village” that make those communities tick. (more…)
