“For the fiercely debated topic of traffic manners, Cyclist v. Cyclist edition, I’d like to ask people’s thoughts on the intersection of Vermont Ave NW and 11th Street NW.”

“Dear PoPville,

11th Street is a known cyclists’ highway, with hundreds of cyclists heading south in the mornings. The place where 11th street meets Vermont Ave is a T-intersection, meaning that southbound traffic coming from Vermont Ave must turn either left or right onto 11th street. This seems to give 11th street cyclists the impression that the traffic light at this intersection can be ignored. When Vermont Ave traffic has a green light, meaning 11th street traffic has a red light, cyclists traveling south on 11th will blow right through their red light, into the intersection while cars and cyclists are trying to merge from Vermont. Almost never do they bother to slow down or even glance over to see if cars (or cyclists!) are coming before running the red light. (more…)

“Crew Club closing in Logan Circle”

The Washington Blade reports:

“The Crew Club, which has operated as a gym, sauna and bathhouse for gay men in the nation’s capital for 25 years, will close its doors for good at its Logan Circle area location on February 29, according to its founder and co-owner DC Allen.” The report goes on to say that the building has been sold to Douglas Development.

“That didn’t last long”

“Dear PoPville,

Behold, the 1300 block of 14th Street NW, which was under construction for more than a year and included lots of utility excavation. It was recently repaved, as the multi-million-dollar project is coming to and end.

And yet: a contractor has already dug up the road. Don’t these guys coordinate? Why is DDOT apparently rubber-stamping permits? What a waste of tax dollars and resources.”

Another reader echoes the sentiment: “Is there a timeline or estimated completion date for the road work that has been going on for months at 14th and R NW? I’ve lived above it since August and they’ve been opening new holes in the street about every other week. Now again this morning.”

“Dear PoPville,

We live near the intersection of 12th St. & N St. NW. Over the last few months — and most recently last night — we’ve noticed police activity on our block that we don’t really understand. We’re hoping that the community might shed some light.

In short, several police cars will pull over a car (sometimes with a squad car blocking that car from the front); an officer will approach the driver and have him out of the car within a minute or so; the driver will then be put in the back of a police car a few seconds later (sometimes cuffed, sometimes we’re not sure, but never with any fuss); and finally a different police officer will immediately hop into the pulled-over car and drive it away (without, e.g., first documenting any evidence). To be clear, the entire sequence of events lasts only 3-5 minutes — much too quickly to be an ordinary traffic stop, in our view. And we’ve never before seen a police officer get into someone’s car and drive it away. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

There is a woman that lives outside of Seaton Elementary School on 10th Street NW. She’s been there for a few months, in all conditions. We’ve dropped off left overs for her and exchanged polite pleasantries at times. We’ve called the shelter hotline on particularly cold nights, concerned for her safety. Until recently we haven’t had any other concerns related to her.

Over the past few weeks, however, she’s consistently been using our alley as a bathroom. With our block full of curious kids and dogs, and rain too infrequent to be a reliable clean up method, a few of us neighbors have done our best to continually clean up after her. (more…)

My boyfriend and I were followed and harassed by a homeless man last night around the Logan/Dupont area. The encounter was rather aggressive and continuously escalated – with him blocking our path, trying to get my boyfriend to give him money from the ATM, and yelling and cursing at us until we managed to run away and call the cops. “Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a homicide that occurred on Thursday, December 19, 2019, in the 3900 block of Minnesota Avenue, Northeast.

At approximately 3:58 pm, members of the Sixth District responded to the listed location for the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound. (more…)
