Michael Neibauer of WBJ has the scoop:

“A deal to put a Giant supermarket at Third and H streets NE two blocks from Union Station is imminent, sources tell the Washington Business Journal.”

There was a lot of speculation as to which grocery store would arrive. Folks were, understandably, pining for a Harris Teeter or Whole Foods. Those would certainly be great. And I know not everyone will agree with me, but I’ve been a big fan of the Giant in Columbia Heights. So overall I’d say this a great addition to the H Street, NE corridor.

Does anyone think Harris Teeter will ever open up another location in DC?

Update: Dang I forgot Harris Teeter is opening one up at 1st and M St, NE.

I’ll admit I was very skeptical when I first heard about plans for a Jewish Deli combined with an Irish Tavern. Well, Star & Shamrock located at 1341 H Street, NE really impressed me. The space is quite comfortable with a huge bar, plenty of tables and tvs:

As a proud American Jew originally from New York who also drinks a lot of whiskey I feel especially qualified to give a huge thumbs up to this place. Even the latkes were good! Sadly I didn’t get to try any deli sandwiches but I have very high hopes.

A few more photos after the jump plus their soft opening menu. (more…)

A couple of weeks ago DC Mud reported that:

“The H Street Connection, a 433,000 s.f. residential and retail project that will fill two full blocks along H Street, cleared a major hurdle in its path toward District approval. Developer Parcel Seven Associates (a.k.a. Rappaport Companies), has been given approval recently by the Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC), an event that is certain to make its stock go up when the project goes before the Zoning Commission (ZC) for review.”

When walking by that strip on the 900 block of H St, NE I happened to notice that there was a sign saying that a 7-11 was coming soon to 957 H St, NE. I wonder if that is an old sign or if a 7-11 really is coming before major construction begins. It actually got me thinking about how long it takes many of these projects to kick off after we’ve heard about them. When do you think this section of H St, NE will likely get developed? 5 years, 10 years? More, less?

I started thinking about it after I passed the old Kelsey Gardens spot on 7th Street, NW and realized there has been no progress there after hearing about all the plans. And also the nearby O St. market for that matter…

This house is located at 630 15th Street, NE:

The flier says:

“Gorgeous Top to Bottom Renovation of Capitol Hill Classic. Ten foot ceilings, gleaming new hardwoods, new kitchen with granite and stainless, new bathrooms, new roof and HVAC. Fresh landscaping and new rear deck. One block from H St. revitalization. This property will not last long.”

You can find more info and photos here.

As always, what do you think of the renovation itself? Does $449,900 sound reasonable for this 3 bed/2.5 bath?

I stopped by for a drink last night and learned some very interesting news – all of the crazy memorabilia is being removed. Apparently it belongs to a (possibly defunct) museum in Baltimore. I asked the bartender what the new theme would be and he said he wasn’t sure.

And here’s even crazier news from twitter – @HStreetDC writes:

“H St’s @RedandBlackBar and Palace of Wonder will have new partnership: Red and Black Palace. Great new burger joint, bigger bands

and

Joe Englert presenting plans to ANC’s ABL committee to combine Palace of Wonders and @RedandBlackBar.”

I also asked the bartender about this but he said he hadn’t heard about it. Stay tuned for more info as it becomes available.

Update: More from HStreetDC in the comments:

“Englert and Nicklas presented the merger to the ANC6a ABL committee on Tuesday night. They have to tear out a second floor wall between the two places and even out the floor levels to make one big performance space with a good stage. They can get national level bands with the additional space. The burlesque-type acts will still be featured several nights a week.
They’ll add a real kitchen with American food, featuring gourmet burgers. Food probably by Folkman and Cashion.

Why the ABL? Two liquor licenses, two voluntary agreements. They’ll have to merge them and that requires bureaucratic changes.”

Never a dull moment along H Street, NE. Because of the rapid changes I’ve recruited Nick and Amelia (of Cabin Fever video fame) to be an extra set of eyes and ears for me. Nick sends in photos of the newly opened Liberty Tree restaurant located at 1016 H Street, NE. You can see their menu here.

Stay tuned for lots more development news from H St, NE (including some fresh scuttlebutt).

1238 H Street, NE

As always, on a scuttlebutt post it is not confirmed but I believe this news has a high likelihood to be accurate. In other words I didn’t just hear this from a random lady at the grocery store… One more caveat is that I’m not exactly sure that this is the correct building. It could be another one from the 1200 block of H Street, NE. So here’s exactly what I heard – the owner of the bar Wisdom (which incidentally we just checked out a couple of weeks ago) has purchased a property next to Granville Moore’s located at 1238 H Street, NE. I hear that he is going to lease out the lower level to Granville Moore’s and the top level will host a bar, presumably similar to the style of Wisdom.

Again I’m not sure if this means The Martini Lounge will no longer exist or if it is a different building. I promise to update with more info as it becomes available. But this is the fun of running a blog – I can share with you interesting rumors as I hear them. I do believe this rumor will turn out to be true but like all scuttlebutt you have to take it with a grain of salt.

The old Pap & Petey’s located at 421 H Street NE is becoming Toyland. For those that live in the neighborhood they’re having a sneak preview this evening.

Here’s what it looks like through the window:

And in other H Street news it looks like the Rock and Roll Hotel has applied to open up a rooftop deck.
