Special Halloween edition of Microbes After Hours!

What happens to us after we die? A decomposing corpse becomes its own mini-ecosystem, hosting insects, scavengers and multitudes of microbes. Microbes from the environment, the corpse, as well as the insects and scavengers are blended together and work to recycle tissues back to their constituents. Dr. Jennifer DeBruyn (Associate Professor, The University of Tennessee) will discuss the fascinating process of human decomposition, and how scientists are using that information to inform forensic science, livestock mortality management and fossilization.

Can’t attend in person? We will also be live streaming on YouTube.”

Thanks to a reader for sending this photo from this morning. Another reader also sent word that they heard the building was for sale. At this time, not clear what the plans are for Russia House but we’ll update as soon as more info is known. Anyone else hear anything?

Ed. Note: Russia House is the same group that owned the recently shuttered Alphonse on U Street.

marlo

A reader writes:

“We found this lovely dog named Marlo running between 15th and S Street. She had tags and a collar, but no one picked up the phone when we called. The woman who helped me, Katherine, took the dog back to her house in the meantime.”

Amsterdam
1829 M Street, NW

Last week I shared some scuttlebutt about Amsterdam Falafel potentially coming to the House of Kabob space on M Street when they close in October. While nothing is in stone I am happy to say that Amsterdam Falafel confirms that they are looking at that space. They’d also be interested in your feedback for those that work, live in the neighborhood – if they do take over the space would you like to see them have daytime and nighttime hours?
