Looks like we finally have an opening date for the DraftHouse Comedy – upcoming events start to show on their website starting March 18th. Though their about page says:

OPENING APRIL FOOLS DAY WEEKEND 2016! DOWNTOWN DC!

The owners of the Arlington Drafthouse are thrilled to open a comedy arts theater in Downtown DC! We have chosen to be different than the the typical comedy club and instead offer an arts space committed to comedy and our community. This means great sight lines, an intimate setting, no minimum purchase requirements for patrons, tall ceilings, and shared laughter.

We will feature mostly stand-up comedy, while also dedicating time to sketch and improv. Shows will be targeted to 70 to 80 minutes in length. Each weekend will feature, on average, 8 shows (2 on Thursday, 3 on Friday, and 3 on Saturday). This schedule allows for two headliners to perform each weekend, splitting the shows between them. This will significantly increase the opportunity to feature a diverse offering of top national comics to the DC area. As we expand our offerings in the first year, we will add off-broadway style comedy arts to the line up.

The Drafthouse Comedy Theater is styled after a black box arts theater. The theater is located in the heart of downtown Washington, DC on the corner of 13th and L streets NW – 3 blocks north of the theater district and 3 blocks west of the Convention Center.

As a black box theater, the Drafthouse Comedy Theater will offer concession beer, wine, liquor, and some light fare. There are no minimum purchase requirements for patrons, nor is there table-side service. Doors open typically 20 minutes before showtimes and seating is general admission.

We can’t wait to see you at our new space!”

A reader reports:

“I stopped by Swings for my morning coffee and noticed this devastating sign. They are closing in March for an estimated 14 months while the CFPB building is renovated. While there are plenty of coffee shops in the WH area – Starbucks, Peets, Juan Valdez, and even Pleasant Pops across the park – losing Swings will be a tough blow to the neighborhood. Crazy to think that there will be a new President in the White House when they come back.”

From MPD:

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to share a story of a true good Samaritan. I was walking this evening around 6:30pm near Connecticut and M St NW and saw a girl in her 20s stumbling down the sidewalk. I thought she was probably intoxicated, but then realized something else was going on when she started running in and out of traffic on Connecticut and then fell, slamming into the sidewalk. As I got closer I could see she could barely breathe and was clearly panicking, experiencing some sort of drug effects. While my friend and I were trying to figure out what to do, a woman in her 30s walked by, saw what was going on, and approached the girl. She asked her name, crouched down next to her and started rubbing her back and breathing with her, calming the girl down. The girl began vomiting and the woman held back her hair, not flinching a bit. She continued to talk to the girl, breathe with her and reassure her while I called an ambulance. Once the paramedics arrived and had taken control of the situation, she wished the girl well and quietly went on her way.

I know sometimes it seems there’s plenty of bad in the city, but this woman’s utter compassion was a first-hand reminder that people really are pretty amazing. The woman said that she was a med student, and I have no doubt she’ll be an amazing doctor. It was incredible to watch. The girl could have had a far worse outcome if it hadn’t been for someone willing to jump in and help a total stranger.”

“Dear PoPville,

7th st NW bike lane painted over this morning [Monday], sharrows instead. There goes my safe commute. why? You can see the sharrows and the blacked out bike lane across the street, along with the spray paint guides for the other lane in the foreground. This is the block of 7th between N and O, NW.”

Ed. Note: Looks like it could have something to do with that construction sign in the background – maybe it’s only temporary until the work is completed?
