From a press release:

“Vieux Carre, a New Orleans-style cocktail bar in downtown D.C. (1413 K Street NW), opens tonight and promises to bring a taste of the Big Easy to the nation’s capital. Vieux Carre — or “French Quarter” — is inspired by the world-famous party town and its rich history of one-of-a-kind food and drinks.

The stylish, candlelit venue features a mezzanine level that allows bar patrons to look down at the marble bar and first floor below, reminiscent of the many historic buildings on New Orleans’ Bourbon Street. The chandeliers and wrought-iron details create an old-world vibe, while dark paneling makes it modern. The bar also includes a “bartender’s lab” with a special glass window through which guests can watch bartenders preparing garnishes, syrups and other add-ons for delicious, unique New Orleans-inspired cocktails.

Guests will enjoy classic Louisiana drinks such as the Hurricane and French 75, the namesake Vieux Carre as well as lesser-known cocktails like the Bywater and Absinthe Frappe, in addition to Abita Beer, a New Orleans favorite. The bar will also serve alcoholic and non-alcoholic snow balls, with rotating flavors of shaved ice made in-house for a fun twist on a childhood summer treat. This Fall, Vieux Carre will begin serving New Orleans staples like po’ boys and cajun fries. (more…)

From the DowntownDC BID:

“Statement from Executive Director Neil Albert on WMATA’s Plan to Permanently Eliminate Late-Night Metrorail Service

“The elimination of late-night Metrorail service could halt the transformation DowntownDC has been experiencing over the past 17 years.

“The elimination of late-night Metro service would return Downtown to the year 1999, the last time Metro closed at midnight. That year, the decision was made to extend service hours until 1am on Friday and Saturday nights. Later, in 2007, with strong support from the business community, late-night weekend service was further extended to 3am as Metro’s leadership leveraged private sector investments in the downtown late-night economy. Thanks to Adam for sending word about the newest Compass Coffee location. Last week we noted La Colombe’s quest for coffee domination with their coming location at the old Dickey’s Frozen Custard space on I Street, NW. Obviously that aggression could not stand unchecked so stay tuned for lots of great coffee options on I Street very soon.
