1710 I Street, NW

A reader reports:

“I don’t remember seeing this anywhere, but they seem to have suddenly closed. Bummer, this was the best spot for custard without going to the burbs.”

They used to make a mean sandwich too. Updates when we learn who takes over the space.

This has to be a joke. I can’t handle Dickey’s closing. The sandwiches were some of the best in DC. Fresh carved right off the bone right in front of you. Great breakfast and custard too. Tiny shop with incredible quality. How could they close? Tell me this is a dream.

If this is real life, I don’t want to be here. Went here so many times for afternoon custard breaks.

      • Yes it’s definitely closed, I work right by it.

    Oh no this really sucks.

  • Across the Street

I work pretty much right across the street from Dickey’s. The only reason we had heard they were closing is because we used their catering, and had a lot of employees just go in for lunch. They just only told folks as they were going to pay. A shame, really.

I think the one in Bethany Beach is still open. can always go there… Dick is an old man now. I’m sure he is just tying up lose ends of businesses that his kids dont want to take over from him.

    why was my comment moderated?

  • Muffins

I worked around the corner in the mid 90s for 5 years. I loved, loved, loved their strawberry muffins. Was thinking just the other day I should make a special trip down there to get one. Bummer.

I work a few doors down from them. I’m thinking Loebs and Fro-yo moved into the area and they couldn’t keep up.

  • Two doors down

I work a few doors down from here, and they closed over the Halloween weekend without warning. I went there the Friday before and no one said anything nor was there any sign before or after. Just completely empty on the following Monday. My office used to celebrate birthdays by getting frozen custard from here. End of an era I guess.

There was a sign on the counter announcing they were closing for about a month. The couple that owned it said it was at the end of the lease and the rent increase would have been too much. They are talking to the building management and hope to open it under a different name. I used to go in and chat with them regularly at lunch. They are missed, but I’m hopeful that we’ll see them again.

The staff there was so nice. Anyone know where they went? I would gladly patronize their next enterprise.
