Hoping that the PoPville community can weigh in to help us figure out what’s happening with an empty lot behind our place. Between Chapin and Belmont off 14th St there’s a lot that has been overgrown (to the point where it caught fire on the 4th of July two years ago from some kids shooting fireworks into the brush) and unoccupied for the better part of three years, with three shipping containers as its only occupants (plus about a thousand rats). Z Burger was Closed at 6pm Last Night in Columbia Heights. Could be something, could be nothing

A reader reported at 6:15pm last night: “just went to Z Burger at 14th and Park in Columbia Heights and they said they were closed and the staff was packing up a bunch of stuff. Any rumors if they’re closing?” Ed. Note: Their listed hours are from 11am until 10pm. A call to the store this morning at 11am rang repeatedly but there was no answer or voicemail.

Anyone hear anything? Z Burger opened here back in 2013. (RIP Nori Sushi, Mayorga Lounge.) Updates if/when there is something to this.

“The Third District is currently investigating a shooting in the 1200 block of U Street NW. An adult male has been transported to an area hospital with a non life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg.

Motorists and pedestrians can expect road closures in the area as we investigate.

Thanks to Amanda for sending an update on the former Stop & Go market space: “They are steadily renovating and I have seen them holding capoeira classes a few times as I walked past. A new banner just went up that says something like Brazilian American Cultural Center. It says grand opening August 24th. Samba, Portuguese, Capoeira, cooking, film…looks interesting!” (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live on Girard ST NW between 11th and 13th. Yesterday, emergency no parking signs popped up throughout the entire street. But these signs say 4 spots total but are not spaced over 4 spots but up and down the entire block (both sides) with the arrows not creating any real start/end. The dates say 7/25 – 8/22 for Mon – Sat 9:30am – 3:30pm. Is there anyway we can fight these signs or contact someone to show they are not used properly?”

Update: Suspicious Package in Columbia Heights “no gunshots involved with this suspicious package”

Update from MPD:

“Units from the Third District responded to the area of 14th and Park Road for a suspicious package that had been left in the area. The item turned out to be a suitcase that had no hazardous materials. Patrol and specialized units responded to the scene. There was no gunshots involved with this suspicious package and traffic has been re-opened.”

Update from Alert DC at 1:11pm: ” DC Police reports the police activity in the 3100 Block of 14th Street NW is clear and all associated road closure are open to traffic.”

Raja writes: “Apparently there were shots fired between a suspect and a police officer. There are K9 units there now Fwiw. 14th shut down from Irving to Monroe”

Update from Alert DC 1:15pm: “MPD reports the police activity in the 3100 Block of 14th Street, NW is clear and the associate road closure is now open.”

Jeff wrote at 12:39pm: “the whole block around Target in Columbia Heights looks like it’s blocked off by police cars. Lots of ambulances and fire trucks as well. Any idea what’s up?” (more…)
