Please take a look at these photos. The first ones were taken on Memorial Day, 2014. The last one was taken today, November 15, 2015. In that time period, I’ve probably sent almost 80 emails. This “chicken coop” at 1319 Fairmont St NW was built illegally. The only permit the only had at the time was for plumbing work, and that was for January of 2014. It’s been an eyesore and an embarrassment to this part of Columbia Heights. (more…)

Previously housed behind the Museum of Unnatural History, the new location will be fronted by an equally unique shop: Tivoli’s Astounding Magic Supply Co. This will be the first chance to shop the new store, while also learning about our upcoming Fall/Winter programs for students. “On November 8, 2015, at approximately 8:30 p.m., an individual was accosted by two suspects in the 1300 block of Park Rd. N.W. The victim was subsequently received stab wounds to the leg. Third District members quickly converged on the scene and apprehended both suspects. Due to the diligence of the Third District members, two violent suspects were taken into custody and placed under arrest.
Anyone who has additional information regarding this case should call police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, information may be submitted to the TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

“At approximately 9:19pm [Thursday], officers in the Crime Suppression Team responded to 2369 11th St for a “fight”. The officers observed several potential suspects in the area. These suspects fled from the officers. Three suspects were stopped. In the immediate area where the suspects fled, a loaded .380 caliber handgun was located and recovered. Anyone with information is asked to call MPD.”

“One hundred people walked away with a years worth of free Chick-fil-A this morning after camping out (some more than 24 hours) in front of the new restaurant in Columbia Heights. The 100th person signed up around 7:30 p.m. with 10 alternates signing up right after them.
Participants were welcomed with a loud celebration of pots banging and “Chick-fil-A”
chants. The doors to the restaurant opened up shortly thereafter.
We are also continuing to collect new children’s books at the restaurant until 9 p.m. tonight. The books will be placed in a Book House and donated to Harriet Tubman Elementary School.
With 70 seats inside [3100 14th St, NW], customers will be able to stay connected through the restaurant’s free Wi-Fi. The restaurant is open Monday through Saturday from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., serving a full breakfast menu until 10:30 a.m. Like all Chick-fil-A restaurants, it will be closed on Sunday.”

“Dear PoPville,
I am not sure if anyone else has written in to you about this, but Mayor Bowser and the D.C. Government recently announced a proposal to redevelop the Park Morton public housing community at the Bruce Monroe Park site in the Columbia Heights/Park View/Pleasant Plains neighborhood in NW DC.
The community can’t afford to lose Bruce Monroe Park. The park includes basketball courts, tennis courts, a pavilion, and a community garden. The park is used and loved by an entire neighborhood that is diverse ethnically, socioeconomically and across all ages. The park is also used as a recess, gym and after school play site for the kids at Ceasar Chavez Public Charter School.
This is not an issue of choosing Park Morton redevelopment OR keeping the Bruce Monroe Community Park. There are alternative options to redevelop Park Morton and keep Bruce Monroe Park. For example, there are several abandoned, vacant and dilapidated buildings that line Georgia Avenue that would be a much better solution than paving over a beloved park.
