Brookland’s Monroe Street Farmers Market Season Opening Saturdays, April 16 – December 17 10am-2pm (New Hours)

Brookland’s Monroe Street Farmers Market is back, featuring a new name, hours and vendors!  The market will open to the public at 10am and remain open until 2pm every Saturday from April 16 until December 17 (rain or shine).

Brookland’s Monroe Street Farmers Market features more than 15 vendors offering potted plants and herbs, mushrooms and honey, loose leaf teas, and pickled peppers along with the market’s staples from last year: fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, coffee, artisan bread, baked goods and more.

The 27 artist studios on the Arts Walk, the best up-and-coming arts neighborhood (as voted by Washington City Paper), will be open for guests to visit during the markets.  Only Make Believe, located in Studio 1, will share a special performance beginning at 1:30pm for all market guests.  Come early for face painting, costume making, balloon twisting, and to enjoy the market and artist studios.

Puts that warning we saw at 11th and Kenyon St, NW in perspective.

“Dear PoPville,

i was walking north on 11th (between w and florida) around 3pm when i spotted luggage littered on the sidewalk. as i walked farther up the street, i could hear fresh car glass crackling. a white lexus suv with north carolina tags had just been broken into. the car was filled with luggage and it had been strewn throughout the sidewalk. the mpd was contacted and i didn’t stay on site to talk to them because it wasn’t my car and i’d given them all the information i knew. i couldn’t stop thinking about the car owner especially because they were from out of town. it seems like car break ins continue to happen whether there’s something visible to take or not. dear lexus owner from NC, i swear DC isn’t as horrible as you may be feeling it is right now!”

The guys who blatantly deal drugs on a daily basis at 14th and Meridian NW were just involved in some sort of altercation. Here’s the scene [Saturday] with EMS responding. One of them is yelling threats at the police while in handcuffs, which is a somewhat regular occurrence here. He will surely be right back out there tomorrow. Neighbors are encouraged to contact [email protected] if they would like MPD to finally clean up this corner.”

“The Metropolitan Police Department seeks the public’s assistance in identifying a person of interest in reference to a Burglary II incident which occurred in the 1400 block of Irving Street, NW, on Friday, March 18, 2016, between 3:10 AM and 5:05 AM. The subject was captured by the establishment’s surveillance cameras.

Anyone who can identify these individuals or who has knowledge of this incident should take no action but call police at (202) 727-9099 or text your tip to the Department’s TEXT TIP LINE to 50411.”

“The “person of interest” is seen strolling through a closed Five Guys last month flipping what appear in grainy security footage to be hamburger patties, though a police spokesman said he could not confirm the nature of the food item being lovingly tended by the suspect.”

“About that accident at 11th and Girard”

“Dear PoPville,

I was happy to read about the positive response from emergency workers and bystanders after the four-car accident at 11th and Girard yesterday. As someone who lives nearby I find myself wondering why the obvious underlying cause of most accidents at this problematic intersection hasn’t been addressed: the lack of a four-way stop.

This is the only intersection on this stretch of 11th where there’s not a four-way stop or traffic light, which causes confusion for drivers going in all directions. Drivers on 11th will sometimes anticipate a stop sign that isn’t there and get rear-ended, and drivers crossing on Girard think there’s a four-way stop and often just drive out into oncoming traffic. There are frequent fender benders, near misses involving cars/cyclists/pedestrians, and every several months a major accident like the one yesterday. A car flipped at this intersection just this past November.

It’s not as if adding a four-way stop would have some major effect on traffic flow since there are lights or stop signs on every other block, and installing one seems like it must be cheaper than repeatedly sending emergency response teams.

I’ve put in a request for a new stop sign using DC’s service request site under Sign New Investigation. Has anyone used that service with any success? Any other advice on getting DDOT to install stop signs at dangerous and accident-prone intersections?”

“Dear PoPville,

About 6 pm, I was walking up 11th Street NW. At Girard Street, I witnessed a multi-car accident (at least four moving vehicles involved, some parked cars hit, a biker nearly hit, etc.) This was kind of scary, especially because one of the vehicle’s airbags deployed, a woman got out of that vehicle and was yelling, “please come help, I have baby and my daughter inside, please help [add understandable panic here].” (more…)
