1001 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW

Sounds like Tadich Grill may be in trouble. A tipster sends word that they’ve closed. Oddly their D.C. Facebook page posted something at 11am this morning:

“The holidays may be over, but we’re still full of cheer…and lobster rolls!

Please call 202-638-1849 or click bit.ly/2fBKzdJ to reserve!”

But when you call the number (where the restaurant is supposed to open at 11:30am) goes to voicemail and the Facebook has no mention of “Fire Protection System” problems.

Thanks to Rachel for sending this note on the door:

San Fransisco’s Tadich Grill opened up in the former Ten Penh space back in late 2015. STAY TUNED.

901 New York Avenue, NW

Last week we shared the good news (for those who work/live nearby) that Bagels and Baguettes was reportedly reopening at 901 New York Ave, NW just north of City Center and west of Mount Vernon Square (where the Apple store is coming) and the Convention Center. I took a walk to see where exactly it might be and hadn’t realized that Lawson’s Grill had closed:

Nice score for Penn Quarter. Stay tuned for confirmation/exact opening date.

looking east towards Acadiana and Mount Vernon Square.

Uh oh, thanks to Mark and Steve for messaging about On Rye being papered over in Chinatown. Almost exactly a year ago I declared On Rye legit. Their website is still active, you can see their menu here. On December 21st they changed their Business Hours on Facebook, which is sometimes not a good sign. I’ve left messages and will update when I hear back. On Rye only opened in November of 2016 so hopefully this is just some minor renovation but history tells us otherwise. STAY TUNED.

From WMATA:

“An alert off-duty Metrobus operator is being credited with the safe recovery of loaded firearm that was carried onto the rail system this morning.

The employee observed a male subject on the platform of NoMa-Gallaudet Station shortly after 9:30 a.m. today. The male was seen showing the gun to another, unidentified individual prior to boarding an inbound Red Line train moments later.

The employee immediately called Metro Transit Police to report what he had observed and provided a detailed description of the subject. The train was intercepted by MTPD officers two stops away at Gallery Place. (more…)

From an email:

“Beginning the week of November 13th, the Teaism Tea Shop in Penn Quarter will be hosting a pop-up by Japanese sweet makers Matsukawaya for the holidays. Matsukawaya will continue to pop up at Teaism’s Union Market space as well.

Holiday shoppers around the district looking for hard-to-find gourmet gifts, and those looking to support local, independent, and women-owned businesses will find plenty of options.

Matsukawaya, a Nagoya-based confectioner, specializes in wagashi. These sweets, traditionally served alongside Japanese tea ceremonies, are intended to celebrate the changing seasons. (more…)
