Ken reports from the front lines:

“I went in to get a few things and while I was checking out, I was chatting with the sales clerk. She told me that the store won’t actually close until June 1st and that they will continue to get shipments of items until that time, but it would mostly be clearance or other reduced items. She described it kind of like a BBB clearance center. She also said that she’s heard a lot of scuttlebutt regarding what would happen to the space, (more…)

Earlier this week we broke the news that the Bed Bath & Beyond/World Market would be closing in Chinatown. Ed. Note: One reader hears they could remain open until April. Anyway, I’m now hearing some scuttlebutt from a very good source who says a Target may be taking the space. This is unconfirmed at the moment but I give it an 85% chance of happening. STAY TUNED.

900 7th Street, NW

Fresh on the heels of the BBB/World Market closing sales announced (as well as La Tasca closing) comes news, miraculously, of something coming to Chinatown.

Thanks to Kristen for letting us know who’s coming to the long vacant Ping Pong Dim Sum space.

Howl at the Moon’s Facebook says:

“Come sing, dance and howl as the most versatile and talented musicians perform your favorite songs from 80’s rock, 90’s pop and today’s dance hits on pianos, guitars and more in a high-energy show! (more…)

Thanks to Kristen for sharing:

“I ran an errand to Bed Bath and Beyond in Chinatown and the cashier told me that as of today they are a “liquidation store” and that they will be closing (I didn’t get the date). I told her I didn’t know that and she said that employees had just heard today themselves. I am not heartbroken by the store closing, but I definitely feel bad for the employees, especially this time of year. Thought I would share especially after what happened with La Tasca across the street.”

6th and I Street, NW

Thanks to all who passed on the sad news from Sixth & I:

“Dear Sixth & I community,

We are incredibly sad but unfortunately not surprised to let you know that this past Friday, less than 24 hours after many of us sat around the Thanksgiving table in gratitude, anti-Semitic graffiti was carved into a door and drawn on a stairway of our historic building. While the damage to the building is minimal and will be fixed quickly, the emotional scars of such a hateful act will take longer to heal. (more…)

722 7th Street, NW via La Tasca’s Facebook

From La Tasca yesterday:

“The time has come to close La Tasca’s Penn Quarter location. We’re sad to see our DC location go but our Rockville and Alexandria La Tasca locations remain open and vibrant as ever, both with fresh new looks. We hope you’ll visit us there for our signature Spanish tapas and bustling nightlife. (more…)

Update from a reader on scene:

“We were there. The gala was going on at the Portrait Gallery – people were arriving on the red carpet.

Ed. Note: I asked ‘You heard the gunfire? How many shots were there?’

Just one, and saw people running down F From the arena. Police were there shortly after and there were three cars in front of the Gallery Place elevators when we left the sidewalk in front of Zaytinya around 7. Michelle Obama, Hilary Clinton, and many others were expected at NPG that night. The gunfire was right after Jeff Bezos walked inside.

I just checked the details – I took a photo of Bezos arriving at 5:10. It was right after that.

From MPD Sunday:

“This evening around 5:15 PM, First District officers heard the sound of a gunshot near 7th St NW and G St NW. Many officers immediately responded and found evidence of gunfire but, fortunately, no evidence that anyone had been struck. (more…)
