stolen bike wheel

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out because I had a very strange situation with my bike on Thursday night.

It was locked up on Capitol Hill with both a u-lock (on the frame) and a pretty hefty cord (the cord went through the frame, the bike rack, and the front wheel). When I came out to unlock my bike something didn’t seem right. As I started to unlock it I realized that the front wheel was not the correct one. My commuter wheel had been stolen but replaced with a smaller mountain bike wheel.

Someone had tried to cut the u-lock (there were a few marks which looked like an attempt had been made), successfully cut the cord (which was no where to be found), and then after taking off my wheel, replaced it with another one. (more…)

Hot Dog Haven, DC-3, closed back in June 2016. Eater DC reported:

“Fledgling restaurant group The Fried Rice Collective — helmed by Mandu co-founder Danny Lee, Matchbox Food Group co-founder Drew Kim, and Scott Drewno, the award-winning, dim sum-making chef who left The Source at the end of April — plans to introduce itself to the D.C. dining scene via a collaborative project slotted for Barracks Row.”

STAY TUNED.

“Dear PoPville,

Zaan Scott is the swim instructor at Rumsey Pool. He’s such a great guy and always full of smiles, and this is just devastating. Please share the link to his GoFundMe!”

On April 9th, on his way home after work in SE, he was approached by an armed assailant looking to rob him. A second assailant appeared out of the shadows and shot him in the back. Although the assailants did not take any of his material belongings before running away, they stole his health, independence, sense of safety and livelihood in that one moment when they fired the gun. Police are still looking for the gunmen.

The bullet shattered Zaan’s sixth vertebrae and severed half of his spinal cord. He is currently paralyzed from the waist down and is living in rehab until he is self sufficient again. He attends physical and occupational therapy three hours each day to rehabilitate his spinal cord injury and goes into each session challenging himself to work even harder than the last session. He is desperately clinging to the hope that he will walk again soon and hopes to be back in the pool as soon as possible. Although Zaan is strong and faithful, it will not be an easy road to recovery!

Zaan is in need of financial assistance to get him through this time of need, and he believes in the kindness of strangers, friends and his community.

We are hoping to raise money through this fund to cover the following: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Early yesterday afternoon [Thursday] I was walking my four dogs around Cap Hill near Lincoln Park when the leash unclasped out of the blue and my Chihuahua mix, Thor, ran off.

After taking off at full speed into East Capitol Street at the park he was hit by a car and caused me, and probably everyone watching in horror, a great deal of panic. It looked just awful, and he immediately dashed off from the street and out of sight.

Amazingly, he ended up running all the way home (a few blocks from the park; to our house where we have only been a few weeks!)

Since he ran off, no one at the scene knew the outcome of the situation and I didn’t get a chance to properly thank the incredibly kind biker that held on to my other three dogs while I desperately chased Thor. I also hope the poor driver of the car somehow gets the word that the dog is ok, and miraculously suffered no injuries (other than some slightly scraped paws).

My most sincere thanks to everyone who tried to herd the dog out of the street and especially to the amazing guy on the bike! I was scared out of my mind and I don’t know what I would have done without the assistance of these kind strangers.

I have ordered some secure screw-clasp leashes and will be reinforcing the “come” command about a hundred times a day from now on.
