View of Kennedy Street at 5th – 518 Kennedy Street NW is across the street

Upshur Street Kennedy Street continues to roll – next up comes word of a new bar coming to 518 Kennedy Street, NW. What has my excitement to a level nine is who it’s from – the owners of Ivy & Coney in Shaw, the bar manager of KBC (Kangaroo Boxing Club) in Columbia Heights and Matthew McGovern, Tchotchke Curator extraordinaire from Columbia Heights and Brookland/Edgewood. Not a bad trio.

So quickly before I get scooped – the bar’s name is still being worked out. If all goes well it will open next year. It will have the same low key, laid back vibe as KBC and Ivy & Coney. There will be a nice outdoor patio area – though the owners are taking great lengths to ensure the neighbors are happy. Many more updates as construction progresses and they get closer to opening next year!

5th and Kennedy St, NW

This is massive news – and could be the start of what puts Kennedy on the Upshur Street track of serious redevelopment that folks have been pining for. The Kennedy Street Association broke the big news on Wednesday:

“711 Kennedy (the old John C. Flood building, next to Culture Coffee) has signed a lease with a great tenant, and will be getting a major structural overhaul and bringing daytime employment to the street!

The owners of ANXO will be doing their cider production on-site on Kennedy, with the hope of opening a second restaurant there in the future.”

Washington CityPaper followed up with more details:

“The locale will have a new name and concept, although it may also be a Basque-influenced. An ANXO catering operation will also work out of the space.

The 300 Florida Ave. NW location is slated to open in February, while the Brightwood Park location aims to be up and running by next September. Fitz says that would mean that they’d be able to enter the market “in earnest” in early 2017.”

The die is cast – by 2020 we will not recognize the Kennedy Street of today. I’ve been hearing rumblings from lots of known players around town that they are all interested in Kennedy Street – this news might be just the kick in the ass they need. Stay tuned for lots more.

“Dear PoPville,

My neighbors have three dogs, two of which are very aggressive. The two aggressive dogs were able to escape from under their back fence last night and attacked another dog. The dog that was attacked was being walked by his/her owners. I didn’t see the attack, but apparently some other neighbors came over to help. My neighbor was able to round up his two aggressive dogs and brought them inside his house.

Police responded to the attack immediately; however, when the police came and tried to talk to my neighbors, they refused to answer their door. They keep their curtains drawn at all times and never answer the door to police. Animal Control showed up as well, but my neighbors still refused to open the door.

I am nervous living so close because I have small children and I don’t want them attacked by these aggressive dogs if they get out again. I also don’t want to be attacked. Nothing is stopping them from escaping again.

What can be done in this situation? I have contacted the police and Brandon Todd’s office and am hoping for help. Are there laws requiring secure fences?”
