2014 Kennedy Fest Street Scene

“EVENT: Second Annual Kennedy Street Festival
WHERE: Kennedy Street NW, between 3rd Street and Georgia Avenue
WHEN: Saturday, June 20, 2015 – 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM

DETAILS: The second annual Kennedy Street Festival returns this Saturday, June 20, along Kennedy Street NW from 3rd Street to Georgia Ave. This community-driven, crowd- funded event includes artist and artisan vendors, live music, activities for kids and adults, and information on what’s coming next to our long-overlooked corner of DC.

Highlights will include street performances by jazz, soul, classical, folk and root-rock musicians. You’ll be able to complete a neighborhood scavenger hunt or buy raffle tickets for a chance to win Washington Nationals tickets, donated by At-Large DC Council member Elissa Silverman. Look for specials and guests at local favorites Culture Coffee, Andrene’s Cafe, Tony’s Place and Taqueria D.F. Local arts vendors include our local master wood carver Boluwaji Omisore, our funky thrift purveyor Vintage Glam, new local screen-printers Aniton Ink, and many more. Food trucks including Street Cream, Timber Pizza, and Karat Cakery will be filling neighborhood niches.

This year we’re marking 100 years of Kennedy Street (more or less!), which was laid out across the farmland of what is now Manor Park, Brightwood Park, North Petworth, and 16th Street Heights between 1911 and 1918. Today, Kennedy is the commercial heart of these neighborhoods, with huge untapped potential to be a walkable, locally-serving main street. We’ll have several DC government agencies and neighborhood volunteers on hand to talk about what’s coming to Kennedy Street NW, including two streetscape improvement projects, a restaurant and apartment development, and more.”

Ed. Note: When asked when they hope to open they responded on facebook: “-6 weeks to 2 months.”

A reader writes:

“Word on the street is that Swampoodle finally got their permits from DCRA yesterday after a lengthy and inexplicable delay. There were people working all day today with the windows open and the boards gone, and they have gorgeous new photos of the upstairs posted on their Facebook page. There’s also diagrams posted on the doors on the Colorado Ave side showing the sidewalk seating plans and it looks great, with an outdoor bar on the 14th Street side.”

“Dear Popville,

While I fully acknowledge that even a strong police force can’t prevent all crime, I do expect the police to have at least some deterrent effect. Which is what makes Friday’s armed robbery directly in front of the 4D headquarters so disturbing. Two men, armed with at least one handgun, were able to rob someone in broad daylight and have not been caught as of the next morning. I live nearby, and can vouch that there are almost always cops sitting in a van in the station parking lot, looking out onto the street. For these criminals to feel no fear of being caught in the act of robbing someone at 4 in the afternoon tells me that there are potentially deep problems within the fourth police district.

When two cars were lit on fire and destroyed right behind this police station last month, I told myself that such a thing could happen only in the dead of night, that it was a one-off event, that I shouldn’t draw any harsh conclusions about the state of the police force. Now, I’m not so sure.

I’m also not sure where to go from here. Is this primarily a morale problem that could be at least partly solved by replacing the 4D commander? Or does this speak to larger, more fundamental issues within the police force that need to be addressed from the top down? As a concerned citizen, where should I focus my attention, and my rage?”

Ed. Note: I’ve found the 4D commander, Wilfredo Manlapaz, to be responsive and overall quite good. Having said that, I feel OP’s frustration.
