“Dear PoPville,
Looks pretty certain La Fourchette’s last day will be June 12.
Their business has been pretty good this month. Even the weekday dinners are busy. Glad to see them going out on a high note.”

Casa Oaxaca closed back in January but now we know who’s taking over the space – Ababa Ethiopian Restaurant. Hopefully they can help fill the Meskerem void.

Thanks to Luke for sending.

Sarah sends the shot above from Adams Morgan and Morskie sends the shots below:
“non-police horses spotted on 16th & U NW by @berckes. I guess this is the next step after dirt bikes”.
Lauren also had a sighting: “I saw them come from fairmont and head down Sherman”

Big news from the Post’s Express:
“Trevor Frye, the beverage director of Jack Rose Dining Saloon and co-founder of the celebrated basement cocktail lounge Dram & Grain, is leaving the establishment to launch a project of his own in Adams Morgan. A lease is still being ironed out.
The bar, which he hopes to open by the end of the year, will be called Marble Alley, a reference to the notorious D.C. slum known as Murder Bay, which arose in the mid-19th century.”
From Wikipedia:
“In the 1860s, much of the Pennsylvania Avenue National Historic Site south of Pennsylvania Avenue had become a disreputable slum known as Murder Bay, the home to an extensive criminal underclass and numerous brothels. During the American Civil War, so many prostitutes took up residence in Murder Bay to serve the needs of General Joseph Hooker’s Army of the Potomac that the area became known as “Hooker’s Division.” The two trapezoidal blocks sandwiched between Pennsylvania and Missouri Avenues (now the site of the National Gallery of Art) became home to such expensive brothels that it gained the nickname “Marble Alley.” In the 1870s and 1880s, the avenue was the site of significant competition between horse-drawn streetcar and chariot companies.”

On Wednesday we learned the sad news of Cashion’s closing (to be replaced by Johnny’s Half Shell). Here are Cashion’s departing words and official last night:
“It’s with heavy hearts that we confirm that our official last night of service will be Thursday May 12th, 2016.
To our Friends, Neighbors, and Family:
As some of you have already heard, Cashion’s Eat Place will be closing our doors after nearly twenty-one years of service. For over two decades it has been our pleasure to be at the heart of the dining scene in Adams Morgan, and we have met and grown to know some truly wonderful people along the way. Unfortunately, we must admit, with heavy hearts, that all good things must eventually end. (more…)

At the risk of repeating myself – looks like we have another end of an era for Adams Morgan. In no particular recent order – Millie & Al’s, Mixtec, Pasta Mia, Meskerem, Pharmacy Bar, Toledo Lounge, Crumbs & Coffee, Napoleon Bistro, Locolat, Cashion’s Eat Place and today we add La Fourchette to the mix. Back in September 2014 we first learned La Fourchette was for sale. The price was reduced to $2.6 million in October 2015. Now a reader reports the building has sold:
“La Fourchette has been sold. Apparently to someone who wants to turn it into a Mexican restaurant. last day of operation will be either May 31 (according to Pierre’s wife) or June 15, according to Pierre.”
Updates as more info is learned on an exact closing date and potential replacements.
No longer active but before it came down La Fourchette’s website said:
“Located in the trendy district of Adams Morgan, the longest standing Cafe Restaurant La Fourchette offers its guest an opportunity to experience fine French Cuisine. Since 1978 Chef Pierre Chauvet and hostess Jacqueline Chauvet have been serving guest the authentic taste of France in the heart of Adams Morgan.
La Fourchette opened its doors, after the midst of controversy of riots in Adams Morgan. The first restaurant come back during those hard times, and still we stand 34 years later. Owner and Chef Pierre Chauvet and his wife Jacqueline made the move from La Rochelle, France to build what is the best French Restaurant in Adams Morgan.”

Thanks to Obunna for sharing another potentially tough break for Adams Morgan: “sadly add another gem to the growing list”
Back in 2010 Crooked Beat moved from 2318 18th Street, NW to 2116 18th St NW. Hopefully (for Adams Morgan) the new location is nearby. Stay tuned.
