“Dear PoPville,

A friend of mine (Esubalew McCarthy) who has worked in DC restaurants for over the past 10 years had a stroke in late June. Luckily, Esu is doing well, but also faced with mounting medical bills and will be out of work for an extended period of time.”

The GoFundMe says:

“Beloved Friends, Family, and Patrons, lend us your ears! ( and maybe some dough,)

One of our own recently has had a pretty serious health scare. While Esu is on a long road to recovery, he will need some help to cover his medical bills, personal necessities, and time away from work. We know how beneficial it is to have an extra bit of help, to reduce anxieties no one should have to live through while they recover. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Thank you so much to everyone who has reached out to send mail to my mom, and thank you to anyone who donated to her GoFundMe as well. My family and I appreciate your love and generosity! Receiving love for my mom means a lot, and weighs heavily in a time when there are not only rough times personally, but nationally/globally too.

Since last writing in, my mom remains hospitalized at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh, PA, although set backs have become short lived and improvements have become longer lasting. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

For almost three months, Governor Abbott has been busing migrants from Texas to DC. Buses arrive 6 days a week from the early hours of the morning to late at night. For 11 weeks the DMV community has been welcoming migrants arriving on buses, with NO help from the DC government. The community has received over 90 buses, carrying close to 3,000 people and spent around $200k of grassroots raised money doing so. This involves welcoming buses, purchasing travel tickets, arranging transportation and accompaniment to bus terminals and airports, responding to medical and other basic needs, and providing shelter for an increased flow of buses from Texas. “Dear PoPville,

About a year ago I moved EOTR, and my next door neighbor, Sybil, is an incredibly sweet woman who was formerly unhoused/homeless, and now lives in a home owned by her elderly mother. The home definitely needs repairs, but having been homeless before, Sybil loves it. Sybil is kind and caring, she feeds a colony of feral cats, and is a wonderful person. Sybil works selling papers for StreetSense.

Sybil’s mom has always paid the taxes on the house, while Sybil pays the utilities and upkeep on the house. For reasons unknown, her mother stopped paying the taxes about 2.5 years ago, and notified Sybil a few weeks ago that she has to pay the $7,200 in back taxes, or the home will go to tax sale. “Dear PoPville,

My name is Clarissa. I’m a DC resident whose mom has been hospitalized since 02/16/2022 with pancreatitis and other complications caused from pancreatitis. Currently, she is hospitalized at UPMC Montefiore in Pittsburgh, PA.

My mom’s name is Michelle and she is a lover and a warrior. She has been through so much in her life, including beating breast cancer in 2015/2016. Through everything she has been through, she has remained a funny and loving wife, mom, daughter, sister, aunt and friend. She is the oldest of 11 children and is truly the life of the party. She is sorely missed at home, especially by her 9 year old daughter. She is the best mom to my older brother, little sister and me. She supports us and loves us for who we are, and for that we are eternally grateful for her.

Like many people around the world, my mom has been struggling with loneliness throughout the pandemic. This long term hospitalization has not made the loneliness any easier. For those who are unable to donate monetarily, mail would also be a meaningful reminder of love and support for my mom. I’m hoping some of the love she has put out into the world, can come back to her, in a time of need. For anyone interested in sending mail, please private message me on Instagram at c_leopatra, or email me at [email protected].

My mom’s biggest wish is to make it home and also make it to a beach. We are hopeful with her will power and strength, both of these wishes will come true!

*She has also always wanted to attend the Cherry Blossom Festival, and has not yet had the chance since I have moved to DC. I’m praying I will be able to bring her there next year!

Much love to DC and beyond,
Clarissa ”
