This means very poor air quality is expected, which may be unhealthy for people with heart or lung disease, older adults, children and teens. Reduced visibility is expected. Wearing a mask may help limit irritation for those suffering from respiratory illnesses.

A Code Purple air quality alert indicates very unhealthy air conditions for the entire public, not just those with respiratory illnesses. “Has this been the practice of garbage collection in DC all along?”

“Dear PoPville,

I always thought that DC merely threw away its recyclables, but it was done behind the scenes. Today, the secret is out. Both green and blue bins dumped in same compactor. According to our maintenance man, it’s the second week in a row DC sanitation has done this. The excuse? “Not enough manpower, not enough trucks.” This was the answer provided by DC Sanitation worker.”
