“Dear PoPville,

Today I got notification from my rowhouse’s management company that on May 4th my property received a Notice of Violation: Solid Waste Not Properly Stored/Contained for Collection and Providing Food Or Breeding Ground For Rodents Or Causing A Potential Fire Hazard. The violation comes with a fine of $75, and it states that a response needs to be received no later than 19 calendar days after the notice was given out (so the deadline has passed).

Several pictures of overflowing trash bins were attached to the violation. But the thing is: these bins are being used by another house, as shown by the location of the bins in the photo (probably 20-30 feet away from where my house places our bins on pickup days). (more…)

Update: “All the desktops were stolen out of our lobby this morning… (this is with a key-card system and front desk staff watching the doors).”

“Dear PoPville,

I am the resident of a large apartment building in the H Street Corridor. When I signed the lease I was promised a tight-knit community and paid a hefty “amenities fee” ($700) for access to the building’s pool, gym, etc. (this is required).

Shortly after moving in I discovered that the building rents out apartments for the WISH Intern Housing program when I noticed all the expensive amenities being taken over by screaming, drunk college interns. After the interns seemed to disappear at the end of the summer, I noticed what appeared to be hotel guests with lots of luggage checking in at the front desk. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I recently finished renovating my unfinished basement in a victorian in NW DC, and had to relocate my gas meter from inside basement to outside the house. Since the basement would become habitable space, by code, the gas meter has to be moved to the exterior of the house for safety. Of course, it would also open up a lot of space too – since the meter is a big bulky thing to have sticking out from the wall. Anyway, this simple requirement turned into a big headache lasting many months, so I want to share my experience with your readers. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have a sincere question: is there some sort of DC law that a car owner must check on their parked car every single day (if parked on a public street)? I parked my car on Sunday afternoon (3pm) on a residential street in my neighborhood where I have parked many times before. My registration and tags are current, and I have the appropriate zone sticker. There were no-parking signs up, but they had expired and were for the previous week (ending the Friday before the Sunday that I parked there). On Thursday I walked by the street where my car should have been, and it was no longer there, and there were NEW no-parking signs indicating that there was no parking allowed for the current week, starting on Monday. My car had been ‘relocated’, and I had 4 parking tickets from the original parking spot totaling $250. The first ticket was received on Tuesday morning, the second on Wednesday, and then the 2 remaining tickets were received on Thursday (the day my car was towed to a new spot, and one of the tickets was for a relocation tow). I believe the no-parking signs were put up the construction crew of a new building being built across the street from me.

My question is twofold: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been in DC for about 10 years now and have lived in several different rowhouse in various DC neighborhoods. Recently, I moved into a “federal” style rowhouse. It is an older house that hasn’t been renovated much, but is in pretty good shape.

The issue I’ve been having is a ton of everyday noise traveling through our shared walls. First, I want to say that I have lovely, respectful neighbors. The issue is that I can hear a lot of what goes on in their house (i.e cabinets shutting, people walking down the stairs, TV shows playing, voices at a normal indoor level etc). I’ve never been able to hear so intimately into another neighbor’s house in any of the previous rowhouses that I’ve lived in before. It makes me feel anxious to know that, likewise, they must hear me all the time too which I feel bad about! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Three weeks ago, I was driving south down 15th Street towards L Street NW. There was a large truck in the right lane, so I switched to the left lane. I then signaled back to the right lane and came to a full stop at the red light. A few moments later, I heard a loud bang coming from the back right side of my car. I realized someone on a bike had hit my car, and he pulled up to my passenger side window, and said “I’m sorry, that was my fault, I was too close to your car.” He asked if I was ok and I did the same. We both were fine.

He had not been riding in the the bike lane that was 5 feet to the right of the vehicle lane, but rather he had driven in between the large stopped truck and the bike lane and then directly into the back of my car. I guess when he passed the truck, he didn’t see my car to the left of the front of the truck and ran into it.

He started to leave, but I asked him to wait so I could see if there was damage to my car. Indeed, there was a large dent on the trunk (presumably from the handlebars?). I asked for his information and he let me take a picture of his license and gave me his phone number. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

My husband and I bought a 1918 rowhouse last year, which still has the original galvanized steel (not lead) water main. Over time, galvanized steel pipes corrode and weaken, so we need to replace the line before a leak springs.

The public water main on our street has already been replaced with copper by DC Water–good news, except it means we no longer have the option to buy into DC Water’s pipe replacement program.

We’re looking for recommendations for good and reasonable plumbers/contractors to replace a private side water line, outside of DC Water’s program. Thanks!”

“Dear PoPville,

This is a long shot, but what could it hurt? On Friday my husband lost his wedding band somewhere. He works downtown D.C. near 11th & F, and commuted home on metro getting off at the Columbia Heights metro stop and walking home to upper 14th. I’m not positive that the ring slipped off his finger, but I thought it couldn’t hurt to put out at PSA. He has a very simple gold mens band, and as most people can attest, it’s not worth a ton monetarily, but has significant personal importance. Unfortunately, its not engraved with anything to make it stand out, but if someone spotted it or happened to find it, could you please contact us?”

Please email [email protected] and I’ll put you in touch with OP if we get a miracle.

“Dear PoPville,

We are looking for a charity or organization that would benefit from a brand new 8 foot FAO Schwartz stuffed animal giraffe! It obviously doesn’t fit in our DC row home, so we are happy to gift it to a worthy cause!”

“Dear PoPville,

I am the association president of a small condo building in DC. Our condo building is new construction, and the first unit was purchased in March 2017. I’ve heard that we should get a professional study done before the two-year warranty period is over to see if there are any structural defects that the developer should be responsible for repairing – but I am having trouble finding information on companies that perform these studies.

Any recommendations? Should we be looking for a structural engineer? A home inspector? Any and all advice appreciated!”
