“Dear PoPville,

I’m a native of Tastee Freez America and come summer, I’m in need of my fix of twist-cone-with-sprinkles. Unless I’m near the Mall, I inevitably end up making do with hard scoop or fro-yo, which while delicious are just not the same. What are readers’ favorite spots for a good old fashioned cone? It doesn’t have to be (and shouldn’t be!) anything fancy. Even info on where readers usually see ice cream trucks parked off the mall (I work near NoMA) would be helpful.”

If you’re looking for one with a chicken leg in it, I got you covered. Also you can find the trucks that sell soft serv outside pretty much every elementary school.

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering if you know of any tennis instructors in the neighborhood? I’m a tennis beginner.”

“Dear PoPville,

We had some noisy neighbors move next door to our row house. We have the original 1920s wooden and glass paned door and wanted to add a storm door to help curb the noise from their neighboring deck that is next to our back door. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies that install these type of doors?”

“Dear PoPville,

I was a split second from falling into this nonsense. There was no one around and the people working below were so far away I couldn’t even hear them, so I wasn’t even sure if there was anyone down there. This is at the corner of 7th and P in Shaw, super busy pedestrian and scooter traffic on the sidewalk. I waited around for a couple minutes to help block it. It was like at least ten feet down to the first landing, and probably 30 feet down to the concrete platform at the very bottom. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

This car has flat tires, parked in an emergency no parking zone, and hasn’t been ticketed or towed – apparently for years. How is this possible?”

‘What Happened Here’ by Dan Silverman: Citizen of the District of Columbia

It was a hot day. You could practically see the steam rising from the sidewalks. But it was an even hotter night and Victor didn’t get a wink of sleep. The A/C unit overloaded in his apartment and of course the sirens were blaring like clockwork on Columbia Road, which kept Victor, or Vic as all his gambling buddies called him, up all night tossing and turning. And thinking about Holly, where was Holly tonight? He pulled his last Parliament out of a soft pack and it was cracked. Of course it was. Sleep finally came at 5:34am just as his neighbor’s dog started barking for his morning walk. Vic let out a mighty cough and a mightier curse. Of course it was a good thing for Vic that he did wake because he forgot he left his wallet at the newly reopened Habana Village down the block. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Last night, around 12:30am, a friend and I were in a Lyft home from DCA when we we pulled up to the stoplight at New Jersey Ave and New York Ave. While sitting there the individual in the car next to us starts motioning to our driver as if he needed directions or something. Our driver rolled down his window and was met with “are you an Uber driver” to which our driver responded “yes”. This led to the other driver going on a rant boasting about how he can afford his car and life without driving Uber. Naturally our driver rolled up his window and locked his doors. This set something off in the other guy and he starts screaming at us. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m following up on previous posts about incorrect billing for back income taxes by the DC Office of Tax and Revenue (OTR). I have been trying to resolve a bill from OTR from late 2018 in which they insisted that I never paid my 2014 income taxes. They added (and continue to add) a range of penalties and fees, so that the total balance is now almost $18,000. I have provided all the information that proves that I paid my taxes, to no avail. Now on the OTR web site, my payments appear AS WELL AS the incorrectly billed amount. Most recently, OTR put a lien on my property, which I discovered when I started receiving solicitations from these fly-by-night companies that apparently buy people’s liens from them at a discount. Received at 2:45am:

“jackhammering in NOMA at 2:30am! I live at First and M Street, NE and I am no stranger to this late night bul***** but this has just got to stop! I’m losing my mind! My neighbors are losing their minds! We don’t know what to do 😭 There is no way this is legal. Permits don’t even go this late!”

Who do you call in the situation?
