A reader reports yesterday afternoon:

“Just had a really awful experience wondering if happened to others- was crossing Columbia and 18th Street and a woman turned around and spit all over me in the crosswalk. I wanted to avoid having police involved if possible and called the Mobile Crisis team, but due to the nature I ended up having to file a police report. It did seem like she was mentally ill.”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to see if you could post something about a disturbing assault I witnessed yesterday. I’ve seen others post about recent random attacks on joggers and pedestrians in DC. I was on my bike heading southbound on 6th St NW towards Gallery Place at 2:55pm. I approached a stop light at the corner of 6th & I. The 6 & I Synagogue and La Colombe coffee are both at this intersection. My attention was caught by a woman falling on the crosswalk as I slowed down to the light. I then saw a man with an angry look on his face behind her and it immediately dawned on me that he had possibly pushed her. I yelled “Hey” and he shouted “she fell” as he kept walking. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I saw on Twitter that splash pads will not reopen in Phase Two. Can anyone explain why that’s the case? The playgrounds are finally open, but mostly uninhabitable between 10am-5pm because of the heat. I’m confused about DCDPR’s reasoning that kids are somehow able to socially distance on playground equipment but not when frolicking around chlorinated water 20 feet away. This is especially urgent for kids who don’t have access to air conditioning and have no place to cool down during the day. I really hope DCDPR changes it’s plans or can clarify the distinction.”

From DPR:

“In accordance with Mayor Muriel Bower’s lifting of the District’s Stay-at-Home Order and the start of Phase Two, DPR has reopened playgrounds and athletic courts and will begin accepting permits for outdoor parks and green spaces for social gatherings of no more than 50 persons.

Like you, DPR is excited to begin the second phase of reopening our amenities after an extended closure. We look forward to welcoming residents back and appreciate your patience as we work to make sure all these public spaces meet our Gold Standard and are ready for our residents’ use. If an amenity at your local DPR facility is not ready immediately, rest assured we are working as fast as possible and it will be open soon.

Starting Monday, June 22, the following DPR facilities will be OPEN with social distancing safeguards: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

LA Fitness’ re-opening email has NOT ONE syllable about what they’ve specifically done to clean the place, let alone anything on an ongoing basis. The WSC email you published on Monday (it’s now Tuesday) talked the talk about “deep cleaning.” How well they execute that, I sure don’t know. At least they talk the talk. I am considering switching from LAF to WSC.

Read this sentence for how much hedging they do !!
‘While closed, we’ve been working on changes aimed at making our clubs the safest place you can work out.’

So, they’ve been “working” — passive
“on changes” — it’s still in process
“aimed at” — not having achieved, but aimed at, that’s great
“making” — still in the process”

“Dear PoPville,

Help us here… we received this attached, strange letter in our mailbox. A lot is off with it:

First, it’s someone asking permission to pick up someone else’s driver’s license.
Second, despite their claim of having talked with us, we have never spoken to this person, and we have been in this house for three years.
Third, why would it be sent to our address? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

After over a month of waiting from the time I submitted my Pandemic Unemployment Assistance claim I finally began receiving benefits. I was surprised that the amount I received was only $779 per week. That would be $600 coming from Federal Unemployment Compensation and only $179 coming from DC’s Pandemic Unemployment Assistance. Based on my pre-Covid income I was expecting to be getting DC’s maximum weekly benefit amount of $444. According to DC’s Pandemic Unemployment FAQ sheet, $179 is the minimum weekly benefit and $444 is the maximum. The FAQ sheet does state that PUA claims may be established at the minimum amount, but that amount may be increased after the submitted wage documentation has been reviewed. (See below)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m wondering what people are seeing as far as whether the “rental bubble” in DC is, if not popping, at least deflating a bit. Currently apartment hunting and wondering if, perhaps without the normal influx of summer interns or fall students/new young professionals, prices will go down in any significant way. Don’t want to get locked into a lease with the normal outrageous rates if owners/property managers will start to bring prices down.

Basically, interested in whether DC folks are in fact seeing impacts of Covid on the rental market?”
