“Dear PoPville,
My kid goes to a school where all students receive free lunch. Because of this, our family is eligible to receive Pandemic Electronic Benefits Transfer (P-EBT) benefits ($28.50 per week for the time school was not open because of the quarantine, mid-March to mid-June), even though our household income would normally make us ineligible for other food benefits. It can only be spent on food. I’d prefer the funds go to someone in greater need than us, but I’m not sure what the best way to ensure this is. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I have a question for Popville… I recently purchased a new home that has very large “top down bottom up” corded shades. The cord mechanism is all messed up and one of them no longer goes to the bottom. Any advice on where to look for a DIY fix? Is there a “shade repair person” I can call?”
I’d start at the Shade Store.

“Dear PoPville,
I thought I would share a pretty brazen and disturbing incident that happened to me at my house this weekend. If for nothing else – just to make sure people are being aware and safe.
Yesterday morning (Saturday), I was in my backyard sanding my deck. I have one of those roll up garage doors, which was shut, and a 6ft tall fence on both side of my yard, which backs up at an alley. So its not easy to get in there. Its 11am and I was cleaning up the sandpaper getting ready to stain the deck when, even though I had headphones in, I heard the garage door shake. I turned around and there was a man standing in my backyard. He looked pretty messed up…didnt seem with it, and was staring at me blankly. I stood up, and told him to get the hell out of my yard. He didnt move, and then started coming towards me. I went into my house, and locked the door. It was a sliding glass door, so I can still see what is happening. I called 911, as he walked towards the door and started to attempt to break into my house. He was shaking the handle – shouldering the door. All right in front of my face. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
Like Love in the Time of Cholera, but less magical realism as we live in DC so lets be real. I was walking at the bottom of Meridian Hill/Malcolm X park; you were sitting alone on the edge of where the last pool would be if it had water in it, wearing a delightful summer dress and had blonde hairish. I was wearing maroon running shorts and a black tee shirt with black hair. You gave me a delightful smile and I returned one. I noticed a look as I looked backed as I walked away and then walked to the top of the fountain. Upon descending back down to wear you were to say hello, you were gone. Love in the Time of Covid-19 still has magic to it, at least I hope.
Poetically yours,
David”

“Dear PoPville,
We recently learned that we need to replace our slate roof! What we originally thought might be a minor repair (wishful thinking), actually called for a full replacement. We’ve received one estimate so far ($11k), and are waiting on a second. We realize this will be a pricey repair, no matter how you slice it. Nonetheless, any suggestions from your readers for honest, and reasonable roofers would be greatly appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,
My husband and I have optimistically decided to embark on our home renovation this fall. It is a big job and we anticipate having to move out. We would like to pull bids from a variety of well-regarded general contractors. I would like to ask about Black-owned construction firms. If any reader has a good recommendation, we would love to hear about it.”

“Dear PoPville,
I am writing with some concern about the test result timeline for COVID testing conducted at public sites in DC. I received a test last Wednesday and was told both verbally and on a printed handout that results would be ready in 3-5 business days (today at the latest). I called the number to receive my results and was told that the timeline is now 5-7 business days. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I am a recent law school graduate looking for a quiet space to study for the bar exam. My law school is closed and because of Covid-19 related closures, I can’t find anywhere to study. Although studying at home is an option, it is less than ideal. I was hoping the PoPville community might have some suggestions for quiet places to study right now. Being that I want to minimize possible exposure to Covid-19, I am also interested in renting a private space to study (for a reasonable price) through September. Thanks in advance for any suggestions or leads on places to study.
Also, because Covid-19, I should add that I wear a mask whenever I leave my house and have been practicing safe social distance habits since March. In short, I believe in masks, I avoid sharing my personal air with others, and I wash my hands regularly.
Thanks again for any help you can offer.”

“Dear PoPville,
The real estate market in DC is extra competitive right now. Does anyone have any experience with escalation clauses? If so, has anyone been escalated based on a text message between agents?”
